    "g.p. weight"

1ed was 10GP to a pound. So, 5000gpw is 500 pounds. Those are some pretty massive coins we're talking about. And to make things more fun, some weights are given in gpw, and others in pounds. I think 2ed introduced the more sensible 50 coins to a pound (and only concerned itself with pounds).

Celestials vs. Half-Celestials: Why are halvsies twice as powerful?

Those are typically creatures with racial hit dice and a level adjustment. Take the bugbear- it has 3HD, and a LA +1. So, a Bugbear Fighter 1 is an ECL 5- 3 racial HD, 1 LA, and 1 class level. For those 3 racial HD, he'd have the skill points and BAB of a third level humanoid. The skill...

What is your cut off point for MSRP?

My first pack arrived as part of an Amazon shipment last night. Opening it up, I found I was pretty disapointed. The Marid was kind of cool, a few others were okay, but the Devourer as my rare didn't impress me. Even with the price per box, I had planned to pick up at least a few more, but...

    Spirited Charge and Deadly Charge

Basically, the two abilities are Improved Spirited Charge 1 and 2. Unstoppable Charge is Deadly Charge except with a greater multiplier, so you have to look back at the Deadly Charge description to see it doesn't stack with Spirited Charge. Also, Spirited Charge is a prereq for Cavalier. The...

A Song of Ice & Fire RPG -- update

Jason Durall states why he doesn't think a new core book would sell here . That's pretty much what I'd say, although better written. I think the best chance a company has with this license is reprinting GoO's book, and perhaps a stripped down version, and writing supplements for it. As I...

A Song of Ice & Fire RPG -- update

Why do you say this? Over on RPG.net, there is a lot of wishful thinking about this favorite system or that (in one thread- the other got sidetracked into Knight vs. Samurai), but the realistic view seems to be that a D20 company will snag the license. D20 still has the biggest market share...

Alternate Class Feature from PH II

I don't have the book with me, but it seems like the character should keep his feats when shifted. Taking away all feats would really hurt the character, and in some cases not make sense ("I shift, so I lose my feats. There goes that 3 HP from toughness...") Personally, I'm inclined to be...

    Improving Your Touch AC

Shield Ward (feat from PHB2) lets you add your shield bonus to your touch AC (as well as grapple checks and a few other things).

Jason Buhlman - the Charlie Cantina of D&D?

Well, crap. I thought the second one was right. hrm. (checks Dungeonscape) Huh, say what you will about WotC's editors, but at least they get the names of the authors right. I guess it's a good thing my submissions to Dragon haven't made it past the "I need to think up an article idea."

    Staffs usable by any character?

Wands and staffs are spell trigger items. The relevant text from the srd: So, clerics can use staffs, as long as the spells they're using are on their list. Fighters cannot use any wands or staffs.

How Do You Scan These Threads?

I voted skim the first page, but this is the better explanation I do (and mostly I just look at General RPG and Rules).

    Crusader in play?

My group uses the same method as Ari. With the randomness, you might not have the exact power that you want at the start of the fight (I played a crusader with a really awesome charge attack, which isn't much use if I'm in melee after round one). As a replacement for a cleric, the crusader can...

    New publisher for Iron Heroes,

That's pretty cool. I'll be looking to see what comes out of this.

    Unhallowed gallery is up!

Huh. The previews had mostly left me feeling 'meh' or 'bleh.' Looking at the whole, I can see I will be tossing some cash at WotC for some packs. Had they previewed, say, the Virtuous Charger, I think my excitement level would have been much higher for this set. And I'd really like to pick...

Standard Array Warblade: Where do you put the 15?

Strength. All those pretty manuevers are worthless if you can't hit. I'd consider Dex, for the extra AC. A D12 hit die means you don't have to worry about Con as much. The various intelligence based abilities are nice, but none of them so good that I'd pick that as my highest stat.

    WOTC switch to watermarking, finally...

Neat! I was thinking this morning that I'll need to buy Weapons of Legacy when I get around to starting my AoW game back up (as a couple of characters are using legacy items, and the player whose book I was borrowing has moved). That's one I wouldn't mind getting as a PDF once they release it...

2007 ENnie Awards Judges and Corporate Sponsor Announced

Congrats to the judges. I wish my name were on that list, but it still looks like a great crew.

    The 1E Hierophant (Unearthed Arcana)

I'm actually starting up a 1E game soon, so was just flipping through my old books. I don't have the red binder on me (I hear you on bad bindings), but I seem to recall them having powers to enter the elemental planes fully protected, and possibly lose the need to eat and sleep. If no one else...

    2007 Judge Selection

One thing about the Q&A boards- the nomination period kind of came out of nowhere. I'd been keeping an eye out for it, and then boom! middle of nomination week. So when I came out as a nominee, there were already question threads up and running, and I felt I had a lot of catch up to do. I...
