    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

SG works great on Balanced difficulty. The problem is that in higher difficulties, the monsters are substantially tougher and get higher save bonuses, and SG doesn't just knock them right down any more. Your cleric will have their concentration disrupted (monsters are smart enough to focus-fire...

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

Not at Tactician/Honor Mode difficulties. It's useful in Act 2 where you get swarmed by mooks a lot and radiant damage is essential to turn off wraith and shadow invisibility. But otherwise it's too slow-acting for a concentration spell that requires the caster to be in harm's way. I generally...

D&D 5E (2014) Should DnDBeyond include an Encounter Simulator?

Exactly. I've played around with the idea, but there's just way too much to implement. With modern AI to make the play decisions, I can see how it could be done, but it would not be at all easy to build, and it would not be cheap, either. And, as you say, its results would still have to be...

D&D 5E (2014) Turn 2 full casters into pact casters

But it would straitjacket character concepts. If you want to play a divine (or, for warlocks, quasi-divine) caster, you no longer have a neo-Vancian option. You're stuck with pact magic. Likewise, if you want to play an arcane caster, you have no pact magic option and can only use neo-Vancian...

D&D 5E (2014) Turn 2 full casters into pact casters

Sorcerer is a no-brainer. The warlock mechanic fits the sorcerer concept perfectly; better, in fact, than it fits the warlock concept. For the third option, I'd pick druid. It would make druidic magic feel truly distinct from clerical magic, and their invocations could be different wild shapes.

    Is TTRPGing an "Expensive Hobby"

My other hobby is ballroom dance. RPGs are dirt cheap.

D&D 5E (2024) [+] Future of The SRD Speculation Thread

[Edit: I see I got ninja-ed on this.] The first question is, will there be any updates to the SRD at all? After all, it's been a year since they announced their intention to move the 3.5E SRD into Creative Commons, and if there's been any movement on that front, I haven't heard of it. Now, to...

D&D General [+] Warlock Build Chat

Per the PHB: "If you have temporary hit points and receive more of them, you decide whether to keep the ones you have or to gain the new ones." So, to gain temp hp from false life, you have to give up the ones from armor of Agathys. And since armor of Agathys triggers if "a creature hits you...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I will certainly buy the PHB. Based on what I have seen so far, and barring unexpected drastic revisions, I expect that I will want to make the switch, and I think the rest of my gaming table will either a) agree with my preference or b) not care either way.

    D&D 5E (2024) We’ll be merging the One D&D and D&D forums shortly

Wizards certainly will not be calling it 5.5E. They'll have some other name for it that tries to play down the scope of the changes, and it probably won't lend itself to a handy abbreviation suitable for forum debates. (While I have no doubt WotC would like to dump edition labels, they will...

D&D General Official D&D In Decline. Source Hasbro.

It is income to Hasbro which directly derives from their ownership of Dungeons & Dragons. As such, it is important to the financial health of D&D, just as the novel lines were back in the day. (The movie should also count, positive or negative.) If you're interested in the health of the D&D...

Except BG3's share of that 10% increase. That part is entirely D&D.

D&D General Joe Manganiello: Compares Early 5E to BG 3 . How Important is Lore?

The details are hazy, and it certainly could be wrong, but it's not completely unfounded. Mearls took it on himself to investigate the allegations against Zak S* and asked for people to send him statements about their experiences with him. This is not something you should ever do unless you have...

D&D 5E (2024) Should Green Flame Blade and Booming Blade be in the new PHB?

I think you're saying the same thing I'm about to say... Fighting styles, maneuvers, and smites don't work well with the weapon cantrips, because they're features of classes that rely on Extra Attack. Any time you use a weapon cantrip, you're sacrificing Extra Attack. Unless the bonus damage...

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

The barbarian's party was all ranged (the aforementioned storm sorc/tempest cleric, Astarion as a Sharpshooter with dual hand crossbows, and Gale for CC and utility), so friendly fire wasn't a big concern except when there were NPCs I wanted to keep alive. And of course you can always just toss...

    D&D General BG3 and 5E Theories. Top 10.

I concur on the power of martial damage builds in BG3. This power rests almost entirely on the -5/+10 feats and on Tavern Brawler*, which BG3 took from "niche feat for grapple specialists" to "the most powerful combat feat in the game." The removal of multiclassing restrictions and the changes...

D&D Movie/TV Baldurs Gate 3 Live Action Series talks at Netflix

I prefer live-action... when it's done right. If this show had a budget like "Game of Thrones," I'd be all for it. But it doesn't and won't. Moreover, as someone else pointed out, making this an animated show would mean they could hire the original voice actors.

D&D 5E (2014) If you had natural armor, would you wear manufactured armor?

5E made a big effort to strip out as many stackable bonuses as possible, especially from attacks, AC, and save bonuses/DCs. This both streamlined the rules and kept attack and defense values within a controlled range (more or less), which in turn made each monster usable over a wider span of PC...

D&D 5E (2014) If you had natural armor, would you wear manufactured armor?

Depends on how good the natural armor is, and what manufactured armors I'm proficient in and can afford. After all, the human body has plenty of armor built in. Your skull is a helmet; your ribcage is a breastplate; your subcutaneous fat is an all-over gambeson. Doesn't stop us from...

D&D 5E (2024) Should Green Flame Blade and Booming Blade be in the new PHB?

Green-Flame Blade, definitely. Booming Blade... eh, I guess. I've always found it bizarre and impossible to visualize -- what the heck is "booming energy?" And why does it only hurt you if you move 5 feet or more? It wouldn't bug me as much if it weren't one of the only two weapon cantrips...
