Seriously, who has ever used an obvious 10' x 10' pit? That was never a challange in any edition. Heck, even greater pits are just minor nuisances in mobility, unless you're trying to run away from something. The real threat were always covered pits, pits you can't see, slippery floor in front...

And the fighter has still more HP and probably AC too, without the need to waste a reaction...

I don't see why would shield make the wizard the best tank. It only grants +5 AC, it wastes a reaction and he has still low hit points and none of the fighter's abilities. Eldritch knight seems more interesting, but even that doesn't seem to be that dire.

I wouldn't roll in this case. As others mentioned above, you only roll checks when the outcome is uncertain. In case of a Str 16 vs Str 8 character it's obvious who will win. As far as I remember even in 3e there was a sentence about this with the arm wrestling example.
