    Turning magic on its head

Thanks for the replies all :) I'm going to try and further explain what I'm going for, I have a specific style of game in mind and am just trying to make it work. You guys are helping me explain it better though, so thanks a bunch for that. I'm going for simple, but not quite that simple...

    Turning magic on its head

OK, so I'm working on a little project, and need some feedback on the magic system I'm developing for it. Simply put, I'm throwing out everything and making it from scratch, and from the bottom up. Of course, this means I'm a bit lost as how to balance it, I'm not quite off the map but am right...

an odd idea on how to revise magic classes for a low magic setting

A while back I toyed around with the idea of making variant casters with far less spellcasting power (spell levels up to 6th, with very limited spell selections), but with supernatural and spell-like abilites and better overall stats. Kind of like bards with a stronger spellcasting focus. My...

Final Fantasy Zero: Design Diary continued

You could also use Dark/Darkra/Darkga from FFXII for that purpose and keep bio firmly in it's "rider" niche but with non-elemental damage. Poison resistance/immunity could prevent damage from the bio series, as a balancing factor along with low damage.

Final Fantasy Zero: Design Diary continued

The Tactics games do have a couple of shadow (or dark) element effects, and some of the others have shadow themed stuff, but FFXI and FFXII are the only ones where the element is commonly used. This set of seven (or eight with holy/light element) is what is used in those games. Also, only in...

Final Fantasy Zero: Design Diary continued

Good to see you're still chugging along with this little project. Keep up the good work. :) By the way, I see you are taking some elements from Ivalice settings, but are you specifically going to place Ivalice into the game, centrally or otherwise? Between FFT, FFXI and FFXII, there is a lot of...

What do you do for...half elves?

I like the +1 skill point idea, but if you wanted to give them something similar to that but more unique you could try this: Natural Bent: Half-Elves choose a single skill in which they have a natural ability. For classes in which that skill is normally a cross-class skill, it is considered a...

Anything wrong with allowing a PrC at lower levels?

That would be Cartesian Dualism, able to deal +735 Mindless Damage to Dire Postmodernists http://dresdencodak.com/cartoons/dc_031.htm

    A different approach to katanas

Thanks for the replies everyone. My reasoning for the critical was that the sharpness and lightness alone helps to make criticals happen more often, but proper use of the razor edge to eviscerate your opponent would justify the x3. Whether you use the stats of a bastard sword or whateveer is...

    A different approach to katanas

Yeah yeah, I know katana threads are a dime a dozen and don't usually end well, but I've had an idea about this bouncing around in my head for a while, and I want to know what you all think. First off, I recognise that katanas and other asian blades of folded steel are fine weapons, but fall...

Improved Two-Weapon Fighting (not the feat)

I like it, personally. It leaves it a little on the strong side, but having a chain of feats to get a couple attacks that hardly ever hit doesn't make any sense to me. It is just another method of attack like using two handed weapons or sword and board, and you don't need multiple feats to get...

Your favorite reverse-cliche character type (or other game element)?

Half-Orc Barbarian That is, one that is calm, quiet, intelligent, levelheaded and nonconfrontational. Avoids conflicts when he possibly can, and only kills when there is no other choice. When he goes into a rage he doesn't lose his cool, he goes cold. No battlecry, doesn't say a word, just...

    Paladin Mount Question

I like the idea of paladins having a divine item of some sort, something that represents their paladinhood. Just some basic ideas on it: -Can be a weapon, shield, armor, holy symbol, or anything else. -Can act as a divine focus for any paladin spell -Gives a bonus to one skill, around +1/4...

Lightly Armoured, Martial Q-staff Fighter Ideas

I could see a metal quarterstaff as a 1d8/1d8 martial weapon... has that come up anywhere before?

    The Multiclass Question

Well, it's not that I wanted to only use throw away feats, but there is very little in the phb that was appropriate for the classes. Skill focus feats for the casters are a good example, I would rather use something slightly little more useful, like toughness and run are. I'm sure theres...

    The Multiclass Question

Here's a thought: treat joining a new core class just like joining a prestige class. That is, give them requirements reflecting the training that goes into the class, and make it more costly for classes who would gain the most out of them. Here's my attempt at it: Barbarian: Martial Weapon...

So, where does slight of hand fit into all of this, if at all? Or bluff, for that matter?

    Alternatives to LA modifiers

Since races with level adjustments generally become weaker at higher levels, especially as caster classes, I thought of using different balancing methods depending on the abilities of the race: Flat exp penalty: For benefits that have little effect past a few levels, such as casting a low...

    Beast Men (Customizable Race)

Wow. I haven't gone over it with a fine toothed comb, but I like what I see so far. Looks interesting and fun, and the approach itself is far better than just a list of species and stats. I'm already seeing some fun rcharacters here. :) I wonder if its wise to allow bonuses to mental ability...

Low Con and Hit Points: Reducing the Sting

Post has been retouched, should be easier to understand now. I didn't set out to use much math, I just wanted the bonus hp at level 20 to follow that pattern, and it turns out multiplying the required levels by around 1.5 each did that nicely. Of course, its also the result of adding a series...
