D&D 4E Rich Baker on his 4e Warlord

I think that it's important to point out that class abilities likely aren't set in stone either. Classes are less likely to have set abilities that use wisdom, charisma, and dexterity for example, but be able to choose among them. That would pretty much invalidate your complaint here.

Why Shouldn't Martial Characters have powers?

I don't see the big deal here, martial powers look to be essentially what certain feats were. Don't let the name 'powers' make you think it has to be magical, mystical, or somehow videogamey.

"Per Encounter"-Ability: Hopefully not in the rules

Can you do those things as often in a single moment as over, say the breadth of an hour? Otherwise it sounds more like an (gradually shrinking) encounters per day limit. ;)

New core races or canon half races?

I'd mix it up a bit. Rather than have a race or template for being half-elf or half-orc (who are each assumed to be half human) or a set of half- templates, have one race of part-human with a number of possible manifestations of mixed ancestry. The ancestry itself can be just flavor text...

"Per Encounter"-Ability: Hopefully not in the rules

Per encounter makes more sense, since it is just a matter of resting, not using some daily allowance of power. But if they were different in ability, like the per encounter smiter were 15th level and the per day smiter 5th, then it would make sense that the lower level guy would need more rest...

Better Names for the Warlord Class

Tyee Because we've seemingly exhausted every option in english, so why not go Chinook?

Another name for the Warlord: Ayran

Yeah I keep forgetting that it's just a compound word then. A portmanteau is more of a fusion of two words. Like most pokemon. ;)

Infernal pacts - appropriate for player characters?

Like I said in another thread , you can retheme the nature of the pact. One I like is the inherited pact, where an ancestor sealed away a powerful devil by binding it to him, and to his descendants. The warlock has to use its power to control it, else it will kill him and be freed. The...

War characters give me a headache

Well, classes in D&D are designed around combat, slapping war onto another title makes it combat orientated. Or if it already was, it makes it ...better? Though the name War Hulk may have been from a possible legal issue. :) I don't really think there should be many things besides warrior that...

Another name for the Warlord: Ayran

If you're going to make something up, it's better to go with a portmanteau like battlemaster or a similar kind of word mesh. Monte's Warmain is a good one, I'm pretty sure he just made it up wholecloth, but it is short, easy to say, and sounds a lot like what it is: a tough fighter type. At...

    Warlord or Rubber Ducky?

Yet another Warlord name poll: Warrior

I'll agree with that, I just felt warrior needed some fair consideration. Other than starting with 'war' and sounding generic, it has not one of the problems of warlord or any of the alternatives.

Yet another Warlord name poll: Warrior

As I figure it, Warrior is the simplest, most acceptable alternative to Warlord. I'm curious if others like it. Here's the points I see in its favor: -Already established in 3e, in the DMG no less -Has 'war' right in the name -Associated with soldiers and the like, due to it being the usual...

    Let Warlord be Warlord

Why don't they just use Warrior? So far as I know they aren't using NPC classes, and we already associate them with soldiers and the like but the term isn't limited to them. Their shtick is 'war' but they aren't necessarily a lord of it, nor necessarily not. I can't think of one downside to it.

A Technical Look at D&D Insider Applications

Regardless of how protected the electronic versions are, it won't stop someone from just scanning the book and distributing it that way. On the other hand, the official version is likely to be of much better quality and usefulness, and nothing beats having the actual book in your hands...

    31 Flavors of Warlock

I was wondering if there might be something else to the feral pacts, but all I thought of was just some variant of druid, it didn't seem like something a pact would apply to. But nature spirits, there's an idea that might work just fine. Kind of an arcane druid kind of thing, something to keep...

    31 Flavors of Warlock

I can't imagine they would have those same abilities, but equivalents are sure to come up. Rather than sending someone to hell, you shift them into the feywild where they get swarmed by dozens of brownies and pixies wielding tiny spears. Rather than a 'boon of souls' there exists some other...

    31 Flavors of Warlock

Actually, I think it's exactly like a pact, only the 'patron' isn't willing or aware of their part in it. It would be a different kind of deal of course, he wouldn't represent a god or have to appeal to it for power, he's just charged with serving that lesser divine beings interests. It's the...
