Does 4e limit the scope of campaigns?

Well yo have picked the biggest difference in the game; almost all classes have 4 skills. And compared to 3.x where the skill-monkey rogue has 10-12 skills and the low int fighter has 1, I think the comparison of 3 to 6 is much less of a difference. Especially as takes a smallish expenditure of...

Does 4e limit the scope of campaigns?

I think exactly the opposite is true. I 3.x the investigation part will be handled by the spellcasters with some help by the high perception classes. So the majority of the game will be handled by some of the PCs while the rest stands around waiting for something useful to do. One of the nice...

Urbis - Should I follow the GSL, or make the setting system-independent?

I assume if you want to publish it you also want to sell the product and make money of it. In this case I think your best plan is to publish it as a 4th edition setting. While going systems-neutral has its advantages, you will compete with everything else out there, including all the high end...

If Everyone Loves Generic, Why Aren't Catalyst Books #1?

I think many gamers make no big difference between generic books and low crunch books for the wrong system. Hence, if you publish a generic book you have a much wider range of competitors. If you write a book about something D&D specific, you will compete with every book on the subject from 1st...

    Wizards Website Survey

I hope they are getting some useful data out of this. There is so much nerdrage on the web right now, that i am not sure how many people will give intentionally false answers only to send a message.

Dragon 372 - Secrets of the City Entombed...Includes Many Necromantic Flavored Powers

I really like how some of the powers generate an epic feel. Especially Sealing Death's Door stands out, with the cleric telling Death himself: "You have no power here". That's pretty badas. Hellfire soul is nice as well, though maybe not in good aligned parties.

    Wizards Website Survey

Yeah, I was kind of surprised that they differentiated anything before 3rd at all, as I cannot imagine that pre 3rd edition only players are the target audience.

    Palladium system question

this is a board that is by and large dedicated to D&D and its side branches. You probably have more luck with your question on sites like rpg.net. However, the palladium system has a lot of very vocal detractors (not undeserved in my mind), so if you get answers expect a little bit of heat.

    Character builder rocks, so...

It might attract more people, but why would wizards do that? They want ppl to switch to 4th edition. And given how successful the DDI is, I would not be surprised if ppl start playing 4th because of the DDI.

The Issue of Hit Point Inflation and Related Materia

Looking at HP without taking damage into account will not tell you anything about length of combat. Even though AD&D monsters tend to have fewer HP than 3.x monsters, I remember those fights in AD&D being longer and grindier than any fight in 3.x, simply because the damage output of most PCs and...

The Issue of Hit Point Inflation and Related Materia

You are aware that your entire post is an argument against a straw man, right? None of the features you are railing against is prominent in any edition of D&D and the number of HP that the toughest monster in the game has have no correlation with the type of game you are playing.

Avenger Class Details from NY Comic Con '09

And you also want to make the prereqs for hide. So even if you are playing with a race that gives you a bonus to Dex and Wis, you'll only have a Wis of 18 if you want to get hide.

advice to anyone still wondering if they should purchase a DDI subscription today

Have you actually used the program or are you just going by the list of reported bugs? Because if you did, I would be curious about the "wide range of features" that you claim don't work. I have created about 10-20 characters and the program supported all features necessary for this purpose. All...

    Fun With Character Creation

How about a Genasi Assault Swordmage/Tactical Warlord Str 16 Con14 Dex10 Int18 wis8 Cha13 Attributes are all the same for both personalities. That reduces the need to recalculate things. The Swordmage side picks up AP:Hide and both aspects use a 2h sword and hide armor. Or a bastard sword...

    Changeover Poll

The simulationist-gamist split is actually the prime example I would use. If you are interested in simulationist play, deciding between 3rd and 4th edition is like deciding whether you want to use a screwdriver or a set of pliers to drive a nail into a wall. Neither one works very well, but if...

    Changeover Poll

I don't think I ever said that. I said that if you tried to evaluate a complicated procedure/system such as a roleplaying game based on just reading the manual you are not likely to make an entirely rational decision, whether you decide you like it or whether you decide you don't like it...

    Changeover Poll

My point there was that if a lot of money and expertise is invested into a game it is less likely to be terrible, as opposed to most fan productions. So it warrants a second look. It may of course still be pretty bad after that second look. No, but I do believe that some people think that they...

    Changeover Poll

Prior information is not the same as an informative prior. I don't think individual snippets of information, especially in the way they were rolled out by Wotc gave any idea about how 4th edition plays. Especially as we all assembled that information in a 3rd edition context, it was really...
