D&D General 50th Anniversary- Are You Not Entertained?

I actually didn't take that away from that at all. In fact, I think Tsojcanth will be the only one with tournament scoring.

They do break it down in recent years. M:TG is more profitable than D&D, but D&D has also been consistently profitable.

I totally agree. "DMing is easier when there are more rules" is certainly a take, but not one that I think is borne out at all. I'm also not sure that "running pre-written campaign books is easier than making up your own adventures" is always actually true, either.

Do you have a source for that? I don't doubt that they feared a lawsuit, but my sense is that the PR disaster in itself was a huge factor as well, particularly so close to the release of the movie. They had to go silent on social media for two weeks during a period when they had both the movie...

It would have 100% happened if the community hadn't prevented it. "We are sorry. We got it wrong. Our language and requirements in the draft OGL were disruptive to creators and not in support of our core goals of protecting and cultivating an inclusive play environment and limiting the OGL to...

So what's your take? Why so many players, so few DMs?

My group also runs at least one free game per month (basically because we don't want to be completely closed to players who legitimately can't afford it) and I can tell you that those games definitely skew younger (college age through 20s) which makes sense. Players that come for the free games...

P sure in this case StartPlaying just paid WotC for the visibility; I don't think WotC is getting a percentage of games off them. But if I was WotC, I would absolutely set that up.

I'm speaking for myself and the 6 other pro DMs whom I manage. So I think my take-aways aren't meaningless, but also far from a broad scientific study.

That's not who the PAYING players are, though. It's Millennials and older. And they're three groups (mostly): - totally new players ages 30 and up with disposable income - hardcore forever DMs who want a chance to be players, and want a game that will happen on time, as scheduled, with...

Re: percentage of players, I have no clue Re: Adventurer's League...I feel like it might be more relevant in some parts of the country than others, but I can tell you that the vast, vast majority of my clients (both online and in-person) have never heard of it and have no idea what it is, and...

I charge slightly more to run in person, and basically for a regular game it's got to be within like ~30 minutes of where I live. For one-shots, parties, special events, I'll travel further.

$20/session/player is pretty much market rate for online games right now for a pro GM. I charge $20 per player for a 3-hour online session.

I think, in all seriousness, it's easier for 10 year old to DM than it is for adults. Most adults are discouraged from retaining/cultivating the tools to "play" in the way that is second nature to a ten-year-old. if you started at 10 and just kept going, it's way easier than starting at 30 or...

D&D General How is Lore & Legends?

That's fine. I was responding to the off-base "Oh my God, how could you guys expect a muck-raking expose" post above, when of course nobody was expecting that, and nobody in this thread had expressed "shock" that we didn't get it. We just wanted, you know, something more interesting than this book.

D&D General How is Lore & Legends?

It's not that we were expecting negativity. It's that we were expecting more insight/insider info on creating the adventures and products than one would get from the already-released public-facing marketing copy fluff. Which you DO get in the one chapter about the DNDNext playtest, but the rest...

Level Up (A5E) PodCast Party: To Slay a Dragon

Weird. Could be an RSS feed oddity. I do see it as posted 11 hours ago and checked with a couple of people. But I just refreshed the feed. If you have a sec, lmk if you see it now. Thanks.
