D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

Assuming it'd be using its action for something else while the party starts attacking, I guess.

The image of the party encountering an enemy Marilith and it taking 6 turns to unsheath all their swords is really funny though.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

Let your Simulacrum carry them, I guess. Or turn the Simulacrum into the Marilith and just have it following you all the time.

A Marilith uses Large Longswords, so those would be a bit harder to carry around, but still, by level 17 that's basically a non-issue.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

For the thread title, they're definitely overtuned. Mostly okay at level low levels, with some really bs spells mixed in like Sleep and Web, but definitely manageable. As you level up though, it's just ridiculous, contingencies, Clone spell, Simulacrum buddy, True Polymorphing the Simulacrum...

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

An Eldritch Knight could know the Sending spell, since it's evocation. Probably not a great pick for his limited spells, but he has something (that he had to steal from the Wizard anyway).

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

That's why my current Wizard is a Goliath, deals with a lot of these issues.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

Since True Polymorph exists, it's hard to find something that a Wizard can't do, since they can always just become a creature that can do it, just need to know one below CR 21.

D&D General The Linear Fighter/Quadratic Wizard Problem

Well, I'm not too sure what point people above have been trying to make, I think it's about if a character should or shouldn't be allowed to do things that are impossible in real life because they live in an inherently magical world. If that's the point, there's no need for homebrew, because...

D&D General The Linear Fighter/Quadratic Wizard Problem

I don't see why it wouldn't if magic is truly part of nature and physics as they're saying. PCs can definitely do things that are impossible in real life, even ignoring the HP stuff.

D&D General The Linear Fighter/Quadratic Wizard Problem

This is how they explain it in the Sage Advice Compedium, two types of magic, only the latter is affected by Anti-Magic Field and similar stuff.

D&D 5E (2014) Are Wizards really all that?

The HP of all characters gets pretty high as the levels go up, so even casters can usually get enough that killing them in one turn is unlikely for another PC, especially a Cleric who'll pretty much always have high AC, and Wizards can get it pretty high as well if they care about it.

D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

I've been thinking about just making all maneuvers at-will, but they never add to damage and there's no precision attack, just get rid of superiority dice. I have a feeling it'd be alright, would prob just give it to all Fighters so that can be their thing, while other classes could get some...

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

So, for a more concrete example, what are people's opinions on the good ol' fighting endless hordes of mooks? Say, a level 20 Fighter with mundane gear, surrounded on all sides by normal Guards, how many should he be able to kill before going down? Ten, one hundred, thousands, millions, etc.

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

What guidebooks say a character can do, and what they actually do in practice, are quite different things in my experience.

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

There's levels to it, I guess. To straight up grab someone by the leg and swing them around like a baseball bat, you'd have to be way stronger, so it'd be hard to pull it off on Orcus unless you're way into epic level stuff. Still, doing it to a CR 5 Hill Giant when you're at higher level sounds...

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

Well, grappling a huge enemy and using them to beat other enemies up seems alright to me, you can do it in PF2e with the right feats. Maybe Orcus could be immune due to being such a powerful creature, and not wanting to make him look silly, but that kind of ability by itself I don't have an...

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

It'd prob be better to talk about a martial's capabilities in terms of what we think they should be able to do, rather than comparing to characters who'll be inconsistent and deal with plot armor and stuff. The Captain America in Winter Soldier is just not the same as the one in Infinity War and...

D&D 5E (2024) Classes: What changes do you predict?

I imagine something like this for their Monk rework.

D&D General The Linear Fighter/Quadratic Wizard Problem

It does feel like spells are on a big pedestal and that they treat it as a very special thing, they're the only system that truly scales with levels and such (say, if there's a magic disease, it can say it needs a 6th level Heal or similar spell to cure it, even though there are non-spell...
