D&D 5E (2014) Battlemaster and Superiority Dice are causing martials to suffer.

Battlemaster is pretty strong as far as the Fighter subclasses go, but it hoarding the maneuvers, and making them lame as hell with limited use, is definitely a problem.

Spelljammer Spelljammer: Adventures in Space Review

Are different solar systems closer in Spelljammer than in real life? Because even at 100 million miles a day, it'd take a looong time to travel a few light years.

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

8 + 6 proficiency + 5 Intelligence = 19, at least. Even so, he'll probably save most of the time, but even that isn't necessarily a problem for a Wizard with Simulacrum, True Polymorph, Forcecage and all that. Orcus doesn't have a teleport in his statblock from what I can tell, so he'd have to...

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

With the using Orcus as a baseball bat example, he's only Huge so just a 2nd level spell or being a level 3 Rune Knight would allow one to try and grapple him. You can move him at half speed while he's grappled, so dragging him over his smaller minions to crush them doesn't seem too far fetched...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Grappling

And my point is that the only way I've ever seen it appear on a statblock is the hit-grapple one, and I guess a few have a saving throw. The contested check just isn't a mechanic that I've seen them actually using on a monster statblock.

Raiden rolled well on his Parry Maneuver and managed to block the attack, then had a feat where he could grapple and yeet gargatuan creatures because his DM stole it from PF2e. It was already at low health, so he was able to run in and finish it off for style points.

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Grappling

Something like a Vampire can grapple on a hit without dealing damage. I looked it up a while ago, and every monster that inflicts the grappled condition I've looked at just does it on a hit. They could technically try it with the normal grappling rules, but it usually wouldn't be great since...

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&D Grappling

Monsters who use grapple already did it just by hitting instead of doing grapple checks, so this just puts PCs on the same level, I guess. It buffs grappling in some ways, nerfs in others, overall it'll prob be alright most of the time.

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

Was thinking about the crazy things PCs could do without explicit magic, in no particular order: Evasion lets Monks, Rogues and Hunter Rangers dodge ridiculous things, like fireballs that engulf an entire room, lightning from clouds, meteors explosions, comets strikes that hit like a nuke, and...

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

A Veteran has 58 HP, so if he's leading a group of a few dozen guards and that archmage gets a good angle to cast Cone of Cold on all of them, every single guard will be turned into a frozen statue, while the Veteran will be there in the middle, hurt but still alive. My boi is pretty tough.

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

Every character already exceeds human limitations just by leveling up, no human could replicate things that they can do, like jumping from a plane and faceplanting on concrete, then just walking it off. They're already very superhuman, I think what a lot of people want is for that to go beyond...

D&D 5E (2014) Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

Martials are great at dealing damage, a mid-level Fighter can punch an Elephant to death with the right fighting style, and by high level they can survive things that'd kill a normal person a million times over, like getting hit by comets as powerful as nukes, being bitten by a moon, swimming in...

Spelljammer Spelljammer: Adventures in Space Review

The super movement via jumps was very obvious in the UA, and people pointed it out a lot, and they still didn't fix it. Very weird, honestly, you don't even have to do cheese it with small jumps to get crazy amounts of movement.

D&D 5E (2014) What (if anything) do you find "wrong" with 5E?

They could do a grapple check, and deal damage if they succeed, that's fine. As it is, even if you managed to have +57 to Athletics, a CR 0 Octopus could still auto-grapple you on a hit. Which is, you know, very lame.

D&D 5E (2014) What (if anything) do you find "wrong" with 5E?

I don't see it talked much, but I greatly dislike how many monsters just auto-grapple you whenever they get a hit. They already have a mechanic for grappling, athletics vs athletics/acrobatics, and I can't even recall a monster that actually does it like that, makes being good at avoiding...

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Spell. Unfair to Heavy Armor Wearers?

I think we need a "Heat Mage Armor" spell to balance it out.

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Spell. Unfair to Heavy Armor Wearers?

Naturally, you can just engage in melee if they catch you, it'll still have value of the few turns of free shots. The point is that it can be better to adjust your strategy even if it means you won't end it as quickly as possible, a Barb might want to run in, but it might be better to just bait...

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Spell. Unfair to Heavy Armor Wearers?

Anyway, if I were to try and make it more reasonable I'd just make the save mean that the creature is unaffected during that turn. It doesn't end the spell still, so it can still be very powerful. Probably add a size limit as well.

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Spell. Unfair to Heavy Armor Wearers?

It's more that, if you can kite an enemy without ranged attacks, you're better off doing so instead of approaching them and losing hp or other resources, even if you'd do more damage that way. Depends a lot on terrain, but against a lot of monster without ranged attacks it's pretty good. Slower...

D&D 5E (2014) Heat Metal Spell. Unfair to Heavy Armor Wearers?

Well, in her case, her brother was killed by a Champion, so I guess that was more on my mind, a 4th level Heat Metal would do the CR 9's whole health in the minute. Seemed pretty fitting if she got to confront him. There's speed in killing, and there's efficiency and safety. It's like the whole...
