    Best solo RPGs?

You can also use Mythic to play entirely freeform, which is what I've been doing in my latest Story Hour. Also, Mythic very recently got a second edition! Which has noticeably improved things.

Thoughts on the Failure of Licensed IP in the Hobby: The Lack of Disney-fication is a Feature, not a Bug

I suspect it has to do with the desire of gamers for "cool powers" to at least be an option. I experience this myself, but whenever I think about it, it seems odd. Why should it matter? Is it just a matter of tradition, or is there something more? One thing I'm pretty sure of, though, is that...

    View numbers

I was mainly hoping either 1) there'd be a setting in the existing software that could changed or 2) there's some place the number is displayed that I just haven't found yet. I certainly understand this isn't a big enough issue to change the forum software as a whole.

How long on average are your game sessions?

Our weekly Discord meetings are 2 hours or less. Our roughly monthly in-person sessions are much longer - 6 hours or so during the school year, longer in the summer.

Not a Conspiracy Theory: Moving Toward Better Criticism in RPGs

Interesting. I think I agree that my group doesn't tend to explore the world for its own sake, and that PCs go about pursuing their own goals. Nevertheless, we do at least sketch out the world, or at least the parts of it that seem likely to be relevant. Part of that is that my group genuinely...

[DCC] Cleric of Cthulhu? Turn Unholy?

I'd have thought that Cthulhu would be all for perversions of nature...

Not a Conspiracy Theory: Moving Toward Better Criticism in RPGs

I would love to hear more about this. I had never even considered a distinction between "game world" and "setting".

Thoughts on the Failure of Licensed IP in the Hobby: The Lack of Disney-fication is a Feature, not a Bug

This is the sort of thing that makes you want to give up on the human race. :p

    Adapting the Thomas Covenant setting

I took a look at Tales of Xadia, and Cortex Prime more generally. (They had not been on my radar before this.) Interesting stuff, the system basically strikes me as "crunchier Fate", a niche that I'm glad to see people staking out. The rules of ToX seem to assume that you can produce only the...

Not a Conspiracy Theory: Moving Toward Better Criticism in RPGs

This question seems to be easy to answer? Your hit point total and ability scores are going to be with you for a while - low rolls at starting levels in particular can be crippling. But rolling to-hit and damage matters only for that round - at most for the encounter. They're exciting. A high...

What Licensed RPG Do You Wish Existed But Doesn't?

I toyed with the idea of hacking Sunrunning (and Stoneburning) into Fate, it seems like it would be pretty easy to do.

D&D was built on ripping things off (Afterthoughts on the OGL/CC issue)

"Good authors borrow. Great authors steal." Yes, D&D has historically been very derivative. But it's evolved into its own distinctive thing, to the point of being a unique subgenre of fantasy. (Not my cup of tea for reading usually, but there's no denying it exists.)

    Adapting the Thomas Covenant setting

Agreed! This is a really good point! Actions have major consequences in the Land. In The Wounded Land, it's hard to tell if the damage to Joan has damaged the Land or vice versa!

Thanks! I didn't manage to get in my favorite Chloe quote: One reason why we wanted to stop the war Chloe was trying to start is that it would put our home town of Locchivo in the direct path of the invading army. Ludovico pointed out to her indignantly during their big scene that trying to...

D&D 5E (2024) Should the PHB have an arcane half caster?

I'm partially with you. I personally think that there isn't much reason beyond tradition for the ranger to be its own class, but I think the paladin is distinct enough to be its own thing. A little closer to on-topic, I've thought for ages that bards should be primal rather than arcane. (Well...

"Recurring femme fatale... Helping us?!" It's been a few months (our GM hibernates through the winter), but: We're playing a Fate Core game set in a fantasy version of Renaissance Italy. (Well, that's how it was pitched, but it's evolved into something closer to the 16th or 17th centuries -...

Describe your last rpg session in 5 words

Fate Core game set in fantasy Renaissance Italy: Recurring femme fatale... helping us?! (Also, I just have to gloat - my character totally caught her off guard with a deliberately-planned quip. Immensely satisfying!)

    D&D General 1 in 1000 chance

I got the chance to sit down and thoroughly work this out today - it actually comes out to 1 chance in about 5130. (124747 chances in 6.4e8, to be precise.)

    Is It Magic?

Incidentally, I was in a Fate Core campaign recently in which all magic was done by interacting with spirits. The great divide between practitioners was which social skill their magic was based on: Rapport meant that you trade favors and keep up good relations; Provoke meant that you compel...
