D&D 5E (2014) Anything You Miss From Past Editions vs 5E?

Can someone explain this to me? Because I really don't get it. Oh, I guess I get part of it - levelling both classes feels more organic, like you're really both things at once. But (using the 5e exp table), how is a 12 level single-classed character possibly equal to a 9/9? And using the old...

[Arabian Nights] Tale of the Redeemable and the Unredeemed

Here you go! My character was (and still is) Abdul al-Jann.

[Arabian Nights] Tale of the Redeemable and the Unredeemed

I posted a log of the original game here years ago, if anyone would like a link.

    Heard in our latest game!

Heard during our latest game: One of our characters, Timios, is a master of disguise. It would not be fair to say he lives a double life; he lives five or six lives at a time, at least. In his original identity, he's a minor noble named Neos married to his NPC childhood sweetheart. She has...

[Arabian Nights] Tale of the Redeemable and the Unredeemed

Been looking forward to this for a long time! The original game was in True20 (and was indeed a playtest of the True20 setting book Caliphate Nights), but I think Fate will suit it even better.

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock Pact Weapon and Sentient Weapons

It seems pretty clear to me that the warlock can't make the artifact or intelligent weapon his pact weapon at all. I mean, if it meant he couldn't put it in the extradimensional space, what would he be getting out of it? Just proficiency - it's already magical.

Al-Qadim: Land of Fate (5e conversion)

Cracking open my copy of Caliphate Nights, how's this: Djinn-Touched You have been marked by your experiences with the djinni. Perhaps you have a peri relative, or were abducted by the djinni as a youth. Whichever, you have not been left unchanged by the experience. Skill Proficiencies...

Al-Qadim: Land of Fate (5e conversion)

Mine too! I still hold out hope that we'll continue someday. :) You know, I've been pondering updating True20 to include some of the innovations of 5e. Call it New20. Interested? Totally his style, yes. Maybe one of the benefits of the Genie-Touched background is that you have a contact...

    Homebrew class archetypes?

Great minds think alike. I was also pondering this for warlocks. And elemental ones too. :) I still think these could be distinct from the sha'ir - and each other. I could see warlocks tied to powerful slaadi, too. Modrons would be weird, but perhaps doable. How about being the warlock of...

    Homebrew class archetypes?

I'd really like to see Wizard traditions not based on the schools of magic. I'm tossing around ideas for an Alchemist and a Rune Mage already. What I'd really like is a suitable replacement for the AD&D Illusionist. Currently a reskinned bard seems like the best bet. Perhaps a new College...

    Other Sorcerous Origins

I really like what I'm seeing in this thread! I particularly like the alternative you came up with for the angel wings - I feel it's been done to death. (I'm thinking of replacing the capstone ability for Vengeance paladins for the same reason.) My one concern is that if you're treated as a...

Al-Qadim: Land of Fate (5e conversion)

Well, that certainly brought back some memories. :) I suppose Abdul in 5e would be a sha'ir with the Urchin background? Or perhaps mix it up with Genie-Touched. (And unless he's 10th level, Aqisan just got severely demoted! ;) ) Which Domains are open to Clerics of Order? Trickery would...

D&D 5E (2014) Does anyone who got an mm at Gencon want to offer up spoilers to us?

Speaking of ability damage, I've been considering replacing the 'hit point maximum reduction' of life-draining undead with Con drain. It seems a lot scarier.

    Backgrounds & Spells Databases

Great idea! How about one for new or variant subclasses too? We've already seen a number of those.

    Carousing House Rule

Oh, another thing about stopping Carousing. There's nothing saying the other PC's can't use the Help action to give you advantage on your saves. That could make for some fun RP, too - the cleric severely lecturing the barbarian on the evils of drink and idleness while he has a hangover. :)

    Carousing House Rule

It was intentionally rather harsh. Read any Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser stories lately? Those guys routinely run through a king's ransom by partying hard. And get robbed too. So I asked myself, if they were PC's, what possible motivation other than masochism would their players have for doing...

D&D 5E (2014) Ritual Tag: When to use?

Okay, but once PC's start researching spells, what criteria should we use to determine if they should be rituals?

D&D 5E (2014) What do players spend their treasure on?

Behold! A Carousing house rule inspired by this thread!

    Carousing House Rule

Hmm. Thinking on this a bit more, I think maybe one should have to fail a Wis save to continue Carousing rather than extending the interval? Otherwise the frail but wise cleric will last longer than the hardy barbarian, which seems weird.
  20. The Shadow

    Carousing House Rule

Inspired by the What do players spend their treasure on? thread, and by myriads of sword & sorcery stories. Carousing is a new form of Downtime activity. Unlike most such activities, the days spent Carousing must be consecutive, and it must be the first activity you pursue after entering town...
