D&D 5E (2024) Jeremy Crawford Gives an Overview of the New Unearthed Arcana

Huh. Never heard it pronounced that way in my life.

D&D 5E (2024) New One D&D Playtest Includes 5 Classes & New Weapon Mastery System

Modify Spell is amazing. And Create Spell makes researching a tweaked version of an existing spell so much easier! I don't usually play melee types, but Weapon Mastery does look interesting. I think the sorcerer is much improved. No real opinion on the warlock.

    D&D 5E (2024) Gaps in Playtest Timing

I'm inclined to think that these aren't exactly "playtests" at all. They're really just windvanes - checks to see what the response is to what they're planning. To be fair, I think actually playtesting on this enormous scale would be a Herculean task.

D&D 5E (2024) Speculation on the next UA in April

Sure, that makes sense to me. People who inherently magical in some way.

D&D 5E (2024) Speculation on the next UA in April

The very most I could see happening is it becoming a subclass of wizard. (Or both of them becoming subclasses of 'Mage' or something.)

D&D 5E (2024) Speculation on the next UA in April

I think the sorcerer has a genuine niche as the bloodline users of magic, as opposed to the scholarly mages. I don't see it disappearing.

    D&D 5E (2024) What the 1e-2e Transition Can Tell Us About 5.5e

I recently reread Three Hearts and Three Lions and I'm just not seeing it. Holger didn't have any magical powers. These, on the other hand, are completely believable. Though the Gygaxian twist had precedent in medieval canon law, and especially in the Song of Roland. (How it makes any sense for...

    D&D 5E (2024) What the 1e-2e Transition Can Tell Us About 5.5e

My experience was a bit different from a lot of people's. I found Gygax at the time to frankly be an insufferable blowhard with over-pretentious prose and absurd opinions. (His take on Tolkien in an infamous Dragon article definitely didn't do him any favors in my book.) I didn't know anything...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Perhaps there are groups where this would be considered functional and acceptable. More power to them. But I will never play with someone who considers it okay to manipulate other players to get what they want. I would consider that actively unfriendly, not 'skillful'.

    D&D 5E (2024) On Feats & ASIs

So much this. Backgrounds are perhaps my favorite thing about 5e, I love taking "unexpected" ones. If they carry attribute bonuses, it'll be harder to justify doing that. Much better to put the bonus on the class! That's what people want them for!

D&D 5E (2024) Is the 2024 rules update a new edition? Argue about it here (not everywhere else)!

Of course it's all marketing, that was my entire point. I'm certainly not claiming that this sort of thing is new. To be clear, I wasn't saying this ought to be called 6e. I was just saying that what WotC calls it needn't have anything to do with reality. Ultimately the community will sort out...

D&D 5E (2024) Is the 2024 rules update a new edition? Argue about it here (not everywhere else)!

I'm honestly a little surprised that anyone is taking obvious marketing ploys seriously. It isn't in WotC's perceived best interests to trumpet this as a new edition right now, so we're seeing a lot of copy about how there's no "editions" any more and everything in the garden will be lovely...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

Given that it's explicitly called "playing the GM", it pretty clearly means manipulating the GM with conversational tricks into revealing more than he intended. I don't think in-game conversations were meant

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

You're definitely right there, as I think it's highly questionable whether the second and third items on his list ought to be regarded as appropriate or functional. I certainly would find anyone who used "conversation traps" to be unbearably toxic. Is there some rationale I'm not seeing why I...

Thinking About the Purpose of Mechanics from a Neo-Trad Perspective

I can attest that when you're rolling 4dF, the difference between a +2 and a +4 is quite noticeable. And stunts exist to provide a reliable boost to a skill in particular situations without Fate points. (The typical stunt is exactly equivalent to invoking an aspect.) Finally, of course, Create...

    One game, multiple GMs

Many moons ago, I played in three Amber Diceless games set in the same multiverse, with three GMs. One game was set more or less in Amber, and that GM had final say over everything Amber-related. One was set in Chaos, and that GM had final say over everything Chaos-related. And the third was...

D&D 5E (2024) How the Aardling should be reintroduced in the future. With a fiendish bestial counterpart

Damn skippy! I've been saying this for decades! Supposedly the Chaotic Neutral outsiders, from a plane of shifting chaos (which is laughably called Limbo, but leave that for now): 1. Always look like frogs. 2. Are neatly color-coded for your convenience. 3. Reproduce by lethally parasitizing...

Commentary thread for that “Describe your game in five words” thread.

"Death curses ruin one's day." A short, but very eventful session! As we were preparing to sail away from the smugglers' port, the Tisroc sent Ludovico a rather polite messenger offering him a job as his Left Hand - basically his spymaster. Ludovico politely declined, what with serving...
