Can sexism be good for plot?

Seperate but Equal (Let's get this out of the way first: PCs IMC can be whatever they want to be. If a player wants to be a gay househusband following his love off to war, and he can pull it off, have at.) In my work there are clear gender roles and ideas within each nation. Some of them...

Vin Diesel Once Again Speaks About DND

Uh, B.K., it's the best game story in town. Vin's from NYC. Vin's a gamer. Do you think he WOULDN'T have been there? I bet he's even riddnen the subway, and been to times square. (gasp!) ;)

    Gygax's views on OGL

No, it's a fact. Open Licenses are why the internet happened at all. Open standards are why we can actually read this website. The question isn't "are open licenses good", it's "when are closed licenses better?"

    Most interesting monster death

best death EVAR! Way way back in my 2e game, I had the privieldge of seeing the most memorable monster "death" of all time. The PCs were on a mission from Huma (a Solar who was cribbing for Paladine, who had gone missing) to resuce an NPC from tartarus. A rogue Pit Fiend who wanted no part...

    Second guess my paladin.

"Let an evil that has behaved honorably go"--sounds like an act of mercy in keeping with the Paladin's code to me. (Has anyone objected in this thread yet?) And the last major thread (the one with the poll) was not so much an argument about if the Paladin acted poorly, but if he should lose...

    Exalted d20?

I've got a drafted deity system that could reflect the Solar Exalted fairly well in a standard D&D system. E-mail me directly if you and your players would be willing to playtest.

    Making combat faster

I ask then next person what they're doing, go back to the late player, tell the next person to roll dice, go back to the late player, etc. It works.

Normal vision, low-light vision, darkvision, oh my!

Fairly well, actually. Not a single player has objected to farsight instead of low-light vision. Haven't had a chance to use nightsense, though--gamers in my circle just don't play dwarves. :( I should probably mention that darkvision does still exist--there just aren't any core PC races...

Normal vision, low-light vision, darkvision, oh my!

I think it's horrid to have to descibe the same scene three times. So, I don't do it. Every creature that had "low-light vision" gets "farsight" instead--they suffer half the range penalties for sensing (but not attacking.) (almost) every creature that had darkvision gets "nightsense"...

    Constant mind-reading?

Don't think that open communication eliminates the possibility of lying. Humans lie to themselves all the time, despite each of us knowing our own thoughts. A telepathic society would be just as capable of lying--although it would be harder to do. (In game terms, there'd be a high bonus to...

    Constant mind-reading?

I've actually got a 32-ish page Psionics book coming out from Alea Publishing soon, meant to be telepathy et al on a "use it almost at will" power scale. (It's a bit weaker than magic, stronger than skills, but tires you out.) Rules aside, the consequences of easy telepathy are pretty much...

    Attacking Armor?

Officially, none. Apparantly, I can destroy what you're wearing, cut the amulet from your neck, skewer your kidney, but I can't crack your breastplate. IMC, of course, I don't play official D&D. I give everyone a defense bonus based on class (more d20 Modern style than Unearthed Arcana)...

    Random Dungeon Crawl

A "random dungeon crawl"--that is, wandering through an underground cave without any real point to it--could be either rolled at the table or rolled beforehand. It'd probably be rolled beforehand, just due to the highly modified nature of my game.

Can a Wizard make a Healing Spell?

You mean you disalllow Flame Strike and Call Lightning? A wizardly "heal" spell would have to have a different flavor--it couldn't be cure wounds, but quicken healing or regeneration or even WoT like healing weaves that transmute damage to subdual damage could work.

How to believably deal with missing players??

Have a "base camp"--and at least one NPC camp follower. Any missing PCs stay at "base camp", and if they're all there the NPC takes over. The missing PC misses some XP, but gets more downtime. (This is important IMC, as healing and mana retention rates have been slowed as a literary...

Has anyone done variant combat rules that remove the 5 ft. grid?

Yes My own variant combat system doesn't use a grid at all, real or imaginary. However, "space", reach, and movement all still apply--they just work differnetly given the different model.

    D&D meets RIFTS

You're probably looking for Planescape. http://www.planewalker.com/ is the "offical fan site", and the inheritor of a community that had a major effect on some of the 2e Planescape books. Planescape is set in Sigil, the city at the center of the Outlands of Concordant Opposition in the...

    Why Villainous Rants?

It seems like you're trying to force something to happen without reason for it. The best dramatic speaches are when the "villian" is actually someone known to the party. And the best way to get them, IMO, is for the PCs to roleplay with the villian. IMO, if you want more dramatic ways to...

File-Sharing: Has it affected the RPG industry?

Yes, because it isn't "absolutely nothing." It's a nonmonetary loss--exactly the same as if I tresspassed upon your lawn, or used your image to make money without your permission (when your image attributed nothing to my work).

    Why RPGs are Failing

I didn't. But I expect my game to either be fair, or obviously NOT be fair. The worst thing you can do, as a designer or the host/referee of a game, is to represent it as being fair when it isn't. There's nothing wrong with an unfair RPG--in fact, a game wherein the characters are...
