    Warforged - Discussion & Ideas

If they are OGC'd anytime soon, I'll find a place for them as-written IMC. If not, I'll likely simply redo the same concept. I've had a cabal of powerful wizards in my setting that use golem-type creatures as weapons and servants. Warforged, from what I've heard, could fit right in. If...

    The Punisher 'laughably awful'

*blink, blink* Are ALL of the reviews on that site written in the same style? If someone wrote a review like either of those on ENworld, I imagine it would be removed for unprofessionalism. OTOH, they also both seemed to like Hellboy--which is a good measure that they have distinctly...

    Best system poll... take two

If you boil down "d20" and "GURPS" to their highly-moddable core, and ignore supplements et al, d20 wins because it has a better mechanic. GURPS is set up to be pass/fail, and contested rolls require more math. (roll, compare to target, subtract difference from target, compare to other...

    Subdual vs. Non-lethal

Between 3e and 3.5, "subdual" was renamed to "nonlethal." In D&D, they're still the same rules. d20 Modern, OTOH, uses a different system. Off the top of my head, a character makes a fort save equal to 10 + subdual damage inflicted, with failure meaning unconciousness and success meaning no...

    Who watches Tru Calling?

Tru Calling has the same kind of subtle metaplot that Enterprise had for its first two seasons. They're probably going slow to make sure that they don't run out of metastory too soon. Or maybe they know that more than one season isn't a given, so they're pulling a trick from Joss Whedon's...

    Uh oh! Fireball!

Hey, I'm on your side! Watch your aim, or next time that mob looks to lynch you, I'll just shout "the witch is here!" and get out of the way!

    Defense Bonuses & Damage Reduction/Conversion

IMC, I allow class-based AC bonuses and Armor bonuses to stack. To counteract this, I rule that any hit that "touches" but doesn't go through the armor is an attack on the armor--roll damage, apply hardness, and hurt the armor. So far it's worked OK. I'm going to pull out some tanks the...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Update to Spellfire...

Yes. A spellfire weilder built to run spellfire can beat out any other single character of the same level. And if they "just happen to" have spellfire, they're still very impressive. CON/2 may be a bit too much--but +1 LA or +2 LA isn't. ? You can be a spellcaster and a spellfire...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Update to Spellfire...

? Dang. You know of a different feat that lets you do as much as (CON)d6 damage in one attack, heal, and absorb spells? You know of a different prestige class that lets you do as much raw damage as Spellfire Channeller? No, spellcasters are part of the core system, and balanced for it...

    How many animal companions?

So why is that a problem? The 3.5 druid can get nearly the same results with _Summon Nature's Ally_ spells.

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Update to Spellfire...

Actually, no. Spellfire is supposed to be a horribly unbalancing power--the canonical spellfire weilder, immediatly after taking her "Spellfire wielder" feat, destroyed a Dracolich. A good house rule for Spellfire, IMO, is to give it a +1 / 2con LA.

    fun with massive damage

You should base the damage on CON, not STR. Other than that--makes sense to me.

Can you take Iron Will more than once?

In pure-rules D&D? No. In my game? Yep. You can take a number of feats multiple times, up to three. A +6 to one save isn't that bad--and I balance it out by making "Items of Resistance", which grant bonuses to all saves, harder to come by. I may just wind up making the items to aid in...

    NPC levels on the fly

"On the fly" I pick a number, just like I randomly pick an age "on the fly." If I have more time, and the game doesn't call for a Special Character, I assume one encounter per month at a set CR in a set environment, and just go from there.

[ECL] When do you use ECL vs. Hit Die?

As I understand it, yes, literally. Yes, from a rules-design perspective. Well, "Effective Character Level" (Hit Dice + LA) is only the shorthand expression for those bits that Level Adjustment accounts for. So, just XP, how much equipment a new high-level character should have, and balance...

What is your Opinion of GURPS?

I think that GURPS is a game system that gets overburdened with options and relies too much on a sense of fair-play to balance itself. On the other hand, it's open and honest about it--and if you don't mind the rules, their plethora of sourcebooks are second to none. OTOH, if you're just...

Anyone else likes Robert Jordan better than Tolkien?

The Wheel of Time, as a work, suffers from having its subplots be the main component of "storytelling", like how an episodic TV show works. Dismissing Jordan just because "his story doesn't have a begining, middle, or end" is akin to dismissing a Jazz musician for not following meter...

Anyone else likes Robert Jordan better than Tolkien?

"Writing" is a skill. A lawyer writes. A journalist writes. In fact, "painting" and "sculpting" are also skills--you can get very precise and technical about either one. However, when you deal with art and numbers, the only thing that matters is taste. "Is Jordaon a good writer" is simply...

    Sage Advice chat transcript

1: Hey, the Sage agrees with me! w00t! ;) 2: Yeah, Skip isn't a full-time Sage, so his rules-judgeship is questionable. His job should be a full-time position (or held by a full-timer) at WotC.

spiritual weapon - am I interpeting this right?

No. A cleric (or any other charater) who take a move action may only make a single attack action, not their full attack routine. (this doesn't make any difference until the cleric has at least a +6 BAB.)
