D&D 5E (2014) Everyone Should Play Custom Lineage by Default

I expect a DM to know what their own campaign is about and to run a tight ship. Going back to your own example: "Born as an Elf to two Noble Elven parents, and raised in Elven society, my Elf forsake training in bow and blade, and instead devoted himself to helping others, and showing empathy...

D&D 5E (2014) Everyone Should Play Custom Lineage by Default

Glad I don’t play your games then, as well. “Whatever the heck-ing” things is not a quality I enjoy in a DM.

D&D 5E (2014) Everyone Should Play Custom Lineage by Default

If my games allowed the Tasha race variants, no, you wouldn’t be allowed to do that. I would tell you to pick one of the existing elf options and customize them. You’d have your +2 cha, darkvision, and you would still be able to roleplay a healer by taking the heal skill and perhaps herbalism...

D&D 5E (2014) Everyone Should Play Custom Lineage by Default

Unsure about the intent (someone wants to ask Crawford?) but RAW-wise I think the poster you quoted is correct. A custom race character has no access to feats with race prerequisites, unless the DM house rules it.

D&D 5E (2014) Everyone Should Play Custom Lineage by Default

That’s a bit of a long winded way to say that every group has the right to play D&D however they want, which btw I’m sure is something nobody is disputing (at least here). The discussion is about what should be the default rule. I think heavily codified, “rigid” races should be the default (as...

D&D 5E (2014) Everyone Should Play Custom Lineage by Default

Considering I strongly dislike Tasha’s implementation of custom lineages, I must disagree with the OP. Thankfully it is an optional rule that I can safely ban in my games.

D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden magic items

Adventures League’s has its own set of quirks and rules, that AFAIK are not published in any d&d rulebook, not even as variants. As such, those rules are completely irrelevant to me and my game, and they do not color my perception and interpretation of the game in any way.

D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden magic items

ASIs can be in any stats, but increasing your main stat first is optimization at such a basic level that I'm sure it's accounted for in the math. Feats do shake things up, but feats are an optional rule, so they aren't necessarily accounted for in the math (although they are such a popular part...

D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden magic items

I would argue that ASI's are a bit boring if feats aren't also allowed. But yes, when I say flat +x magic items are boring, that's subjective. The impact on bounded accuracy is the more objective part of my argument. And yeah, you could argue that increasing your main attribute with ASIs also...

    [IC] Eberron: The Plumbers

"Oh yes...yes I suppose you're right" Liutbrand says to Alara and Alden, noticing the wizard's expression "Flexible. Yeah." persuasion: 2D20.HIGH(1)-2 = [16, 13]-2 = 14

D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden magic items

That's all good and fun, cool descriptions of magic items are great, but you're talking about aesthetics, while I was talking about mechanics. An example of a magic weapon I made for a past campaign. Bare with me, it was D&D 4e so the format is different than what 5e uses. This legendary...

D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden magic items

The +1 sword, iconic and all, could just be a +1 to damage, no effect on bounded accuracy. But yes, a +1 to attack rolls is no big deal on its own, I agree that the biggest effect of a simple +1 weapon is to trivialize some specific monsters. A +3, on the other hand, maybe on a two handed or...

D&D 5E (2014) Rime of the Frostmaiden magic items

Wotc’s mistake was filling the Dmg with magic items that give plusses to attack and ac in an edition that relies on bounded accuracy. I suppose slapping numerical bonuses on items was the easiest way to make them appealing, but now they realize they can’t give them away without throwing their...

    D&D General Active defenses

First thing that comes to mind, if trying to dodge a single attack takes one of you 3 APs per round, facing multiple enemies will be really dangerous. Which is very fitting for a dark souls experience, but dark souls’ gameplay also relies on level design to balance that out: chokepoints...

    [IC] Eberron: The Plumbers

"Hmm" Liutbrand appears lost in thought for few uncomfortable moments "We are very grateful for the information, your tea is positively excellent, and these tokens will sure come in handy..." he takes another sip of tea "...however, I'm not sure we'll be able to keep your name entirely out of...

WotC Gale Force 9 Sues WotC [Updated]

To be clear, I'm not defending piracy. I'm just saying that people are much more likely to engage in it if WotC does not provide legit translations. Fan translations, after all, are technically piracy.

    D&D General BBEGs shouldn't miss.

Personally, I don't think that's a good story at all. In my couple decades of playing D&D, as a DM and as a player, I did experience BBEG curbstomping sometimes. It's good for a laugh in the moment, but it's not memorable at all, I hardly remember the details of such happenings. The truly...

WotC Gale Force 9 Sues WotC [Updated]

Except actual legal consequences are basically unheard of, and people having actual moral qualms about stealing from big (and foreign, in this case) corporations is probably less common than you would imagine. Again, I brought my empirical data to the table. Interested about hearing more from...

WotC Gale Force 9 Sues WotC [Updated]

I feel like we're arguing in circles. Again, I'm not saying pirating is legal or even right. I'm just saying it will happen anyway, and massively so, if translations aren't provided in a timely manner.
