D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

    I was being facetious. :)

That's him, and he has stats! Let's kill him! :) ;)

D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

If I recall from Deities & Demigods, there are at least 2 pantheons (Egyptian "Atum" and one other) that had creator gods, that faded into the background after their work was done, and lead the way for the more relatable human-centric gods.

D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

Well of course. People have been attributing human characteristics to gods since forever. "god made man in his image"... It's the height of human hubris to think they are at or nearly on par with beings who created the planes of existence. - even in a small way, such as appearance.

How Serious Do You Like Your Gaming?

I like a combat focus with a story developing as events unfold, and the PCs interact with the world. My view of "serious" is making sure tactical combat stays within the parameters of the rules, so that the PC's have to make meaningful choices. So, in other words, if a spell has a range of 60...

D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

Yes, that's where it comes from. I just don't care for it. It's one thing for the gods to interfere/intervene with mortal affairs, and another to see them hanging around Olympus acting like the characters in a reality show.

D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

That's the thing. IMO, it shouldn't be interactable. What's the point of being a deity if you're just a little stronger than the most powerful mortals. I know it's popular, but I never cared for the notion that the gods are driven by human-like needs/motivations, their immortality being the...

I could give you examples, but I might get smacked for introducing politics into the thread.

The older i get the less I need.

When I moved from my college dorm to my first apartment, I got rid of a lot of D&D stuff. I've regretted it ever since I've seen the prices people are willing to pay on eBay.

D&D General Elon Musk Wants To Know 'How Much Is Hasbro?'

He would be 100x worse than the the current Hasbro executives, IMO.

D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

I respectfully disagree. IMO, deities should be more than a bag of hp that high level PCs have a good chance of defeating. Not just tier 4 vs. tier 5. More like tier 4 vs. tier 347.

That was fought with fiddles, not swords... :)

D&D General The purpose of deity stats in D&D.

I don't know why they provided stats other than for potential fights with PC's, but at the very least, it provides some objective way to judge relative strength/power among deities. Should mortals even be able to fight deities? Don't get me started....

Elon Musk Calls for Wizards of the Coast to "Burn in Hell" Over Making of Original D&D Passages

I say we should avoid giving Musk any free publicity, or taking much of what he says seriously.

    We’re On BlueSky

Just joined and following EN World. Paizo too. I never joined Twitter, so this is new. Blue Sky looks pretty chaotic and unstructured, unlike a forum. A lot of seemly random stuff. Here's hoping that BlueSky is able to maintain it's popularity, and grows large enough to become a viable...

D&D General A glimpse at WoTC's current view of Rule 0

I think Rule 0 should be defined at Session 0. If everyone at the table agrees to the rules at session 0, rule zero will come naturally.

D&D 5E (2024) What does the new DMG say about gods?

I'll just say I disagree with the 2024 DMG re: deities, and leave it at that. One thing that I like about 5E is that (with few exceptions) it doesn't give stat blocks to deities. While I did enjoy reading Deities and Demigods as a kid, IMO, gods should be several orders of magnitude in power...
