    Broadcast Flag again

The tv/movie industry are trying to introduce the broadcast flag _again_, this time in a completely unrelated law. http://politics.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/09/27/181214&tid=129&tid=188&tid=219 In short the broadcast flag is a technology so you cannot record some contents on your TV (that...

    When's Office 2006 come out?

What's your point? I don't mind CSS-like copy protection. The studios can do whatever they want with their discs and readers. This doesn't mean it is okay for companies like Microsoft to build in DRM in kernel mode that affects the whole computer (a computer is not an entertainment system!)...

    When's Office 2006 come out?

I am certainly not looking forward to this and I am surprised you are. Microsoft promised lots of cool features in Vista, features they have removed over the years. What you get is lots of "digital rights management" (Microsoft is working very closely with Hollywood to make it hard to copy music...

    WMA Encoders

Why don't you just reencode the MP3:s? My music collection is 192 kbps cbr MP3:s or higher + FLAC. I reencode everything to 96 kbps before I transfer it to my MP3-player though. That's 720 kilobyte / minute. I would personally stay away from WMA. The format has changed lots in the past, and it...

    Life changes

My friends and I call this the dentist syndrome. Even if you have a great dentist you simply don't want to visit him. When you are there though, it's not so bad. Same thing with D&D. I can't say I'm looking forward to the next gaming session but once I'm there I will probably enjoy at least 30...

    Worst Use of English?

The entries in this contest: http://adamcadre.ac/lyttle.html The annual Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest challenges entrants to pen the world's most atrocious first line to a novel. Winners — and, for that matter, runners-up and honorable mentions — are generally very long. An example from the...

    Why wikipedia cannot be trusted

You are using the word authoritative like it's a good thing. The reason so many people like Wikipedia is because it mostly correct (at least 95% correct) _and_ it has information about pretty much everything an authoritative resource wouldn't allow. When was the last time you read conventional...

Is piracy a serious issue for game developers?

This is one of the dumbest things yet in this thread. When was the last time you found a pirate who claimed he himself had actually come up with "Lord of the Rings"? Not even those who manufacture bootlegged copies claim they created the movie/book/CD or whatever it is. But hey, what do I know...

    Why wikipedia cannot be trusted

Check the history. It previously said "was belived". Just because some nuthead changed a word on one article out of around 400 000 doesn't invalidate the whole site. There are lots of very good and correct articles on wikipedia. If you find an error, you can change it back to how it was...

Is piracy a serious issue for game developers?

What do you mean with "thieves"? Because If you have actually read this thread, you can clearly see those who download material also buy it.

Is piracy a serious issue for game developers?

Of course, you're a genius! If you sue your customers, only then will they buy your products! I think it's fascinating the only western country in the world where regular people like yourself actually want kids "aggressively prosecuted" for a misdemeanor is the country with the most lobbying...

If you think $100 dollars for a PDF is unreasonable...

Thats nothing! The only detailed book/documentation for writing windows file system drivers costs $95 000. This is extremely annoying because I have a very cool program idea I want to create but you can't just write a file system without some kind of documentation. :)

    Website hosting help

If the current website is PHP and MySQL I can recommend you "install" phpMyAdmin on the current server if it's not already available. It makes it very easy to backup the database. You can probably create a "SQL Dump". This will save everything from the DB to file so it can be imported somewhere...

Is piracy a serious issue for game developers?

Do you know what you are talking about? Take Quake and GTA (Grand Theft Auto). You can download Quake 1, Quake 2 and the source code for Quake 3 from Id Softwares own webpage. The same thing with GTA 1 and GTA 2, you can download these games from Rockstars own site. Still, Quake 4 will soon be...

Do Superlatives work on you any more?

There's a Firefox plugin named Greasemonkey that makes it very easy to customize the web pages you visit. I used to use Greasemonkey to remove marketroid speech and strike propaganda words on certain sites. Perhaps you want to do the same? Unfortunately I haven't updated my scripts to work with...

Sounds like a feature idea: check how many members ignore you. A counter in the user control panel perhaps? That'd be a good indicator if people dislike you (which probably means you should change your behaviour). I would rather know how many (if) members ignore me than live in the dark.
