If you play with feats just check great weapon master, polearm master, sentinel... now is hard to see why a fighter would use a shield.

So, as wizard you have amazing spells to control enemies or battlefield or inflict damage, but you will burn your slots with shield and shield of faith only to survive in melee? Bumping your Dex before your Int or delaying that with feats to survive? And your damage isn't even as good as any...

Strongly agree with the last part, and exactly because of that I think a ranged ranger is better than melee one. Isn't like the melee is useless, but the ranged is better since is way easier to trigger multiple targets that way.

The problem of whirlwind is, at least in my table, preatty rare to get more than 3 enemies at 5ft of you, for 3 attacks, better be a fighter. The ranged ranger can aim in any where, is way easier to get crowds.

Good too, but in that case, don't see why get more than 3 lvls as ranger to get horder breaker and hunter's mark. Voley with action surge is great too, better agaist multiple enemies than 3 attacks. But if is to going to fighter 11, warlock, sorcerer and/or rogue are better options to multiclass.

You would spend most of your spell slots in defense, even them you still isn't a tank and you melee damage is lower than a melee class. So, about optimization, isn't the best option.

ranged ranger 17/BM 3 horder breaker, volley, swift quiver, sharpshooter, combat superiority, action surge. Yes, fighter are better agaist single target but you can burn the boss and the minions at the same time. melee ranger sucks.

I probably wouldn't use the entire adventures of 4e, because was all about combat. But definetely could adapt encounters to 5e, there are lot of great encounters.

you could use a whip in one hand, now you reach is 10ft, so you don't get desadvantage in the EB. You don't need to attack with this whip. But you need a hand free to acess material components for EB, if you drop your shillelagh, you'll need to cast it again and not every DM will let you drop...

You can rebuild all enemies and npc, adding some CR. Lot of work, but can be done.
