Have you considered going all the way and running whatever edition of D&D you played way back when? There are many free "retro-clones"; in particular, it would seem that Swords & Wizardry (OD&D) would be perfect--rules light and character generation takes about 10 minutes. Anyway, sounds cool!

There was a thread about this roughly a year ago. Not a poll, if I recall correctly, but I remember being surprised at how few of the posters drink at all; and many of those wouldn't even consider playing with folks who drink at the table, no matter how little.

A free beer or two probably wouldn't hurt anything. Open bar would probably be a disaster--it takes just one or two fools to ruin it for everyone.

Have you seen Hackmaster Basic? How 'bout: weapon ticks = (max weapon damage)/2, move tick = 5 ft, 10 ft if running, spell ticks = spell level.

You can easily make a d4 or d6 with paper. If you don't have tape/glue, use one of the various sticky bodily fluids.

After reading Hackmaster Basic, I've been toying around with incorporating the "count up" combat system into O/A/Basic D&D. I want to keep it as simple as possible, but still have that real-time feel....
