How will the designers (or the players) deal with magic item influx due to PC death?

Here is a variant of the rules I have used for my last couple of 3.5 campaigns. It allows people to use emotionally vested items ("my grandfather's sword", "my mother's holy symbol") throughout the game, instead of having to chuck it because the next level of item came in the hoard. My players...

    D&D 4E 4E PrRC ~v2.7~ FINAL UPDATE May 29.08

Hmm... 3e had the +1 AC canceling out the +1 to-hit. If they don't give the Small qualifier the to-hit in 4e, then there would nothing to balance the AC boost. Does that mean, aside from qualifying for feats, there is no gain to being Small any longer?

    WoTC Rodney: Economy of actions

I completely understand and I try to ensure that I run my table the same way. I am just concerned that I am not truly furthering the conversation at this point. You have given me quite a bit to consider and I plan to think about it for a while.

    WoTC Rodney: Economy of actions

Unfortunately, it seems we are both too dedicated to our respective sides to be able to convert. I respect your position, and I understand the merits of it. I have a different opinion and I hope you can understand my side. I am going to step back now and see what other people come up with...

    WoTC Rodney: Economy of actions

The flaw in your argument is that I have nothing summons, animals, or even little furry creatures with cute hands specifically. They can, and probably should, stay in the game. However, they need to have a mechanics change to prevent a problem from occurring where the balance of playtime is...

    D&D 4E 4E PrRC ~v2.7~ FINAL UPDATE May 29.08

You, sir, are great. Let it be noted that I will be the second to take DWP (Dual Wielding Pompoms) as my human bonus feat. Maybe I can get a morale bonus - "Rah, rah, 4-e, rah!" :)

    WoTC Rodney: Economy of actions

So if I don't want to dual play my character and a summoned weasel, I am playing the game wrong and the others go along until I see the error of my ways? What if I have a group of seven players and the six that don't play a druid say "no dice" to playing his pets? Does that mean they are wrong...

    WoTC Rodney: Economy of actions

Great point. For me and my players, getting to do stuff is fun. Therefore, I advocate on the side of a stricter action economy. If yours like to have a less abstract system in order to preserve a sense of reality (treating everything as a literal figure with mechanics), then you would want a...

    WoTC Rodney: Economy of actions

In a game that features time stopping magic, ancient dragons with unknowable wisdom, and people firing eldritch powers at their foes... the "reality" and "believability" becomes very subjective. I am "desperate" to ensure that no one or two people monopolize the time allocated to gaming. I have...

Richard Baker on Orcus and Deity Slaying

Games work perfectly until people get involved ;) Hmm.... that applies to my network as well. There is never a failure until a user gets involved. If I eliminate the users, then I eliminate the point of failure. Brilliant!

D&D 4E Keep on the Shadowfell specifics from Mearls (4e designer) .. new info on Page 2

That is very likely, good point. Based on how much real time Burning Plague and Raiders took to resolve encounters 3rd level is probably not happening in two weeks. :) Frankly, I am not preordering it to try to run my players through 2 weeks early at the cost of being able to make their *own*...

D&D 4E Keep on the Shadowfell specifics from Mearls (4e designer) .. new info on Page 2

That is what I understood as well. Each character can progress up to level 3, but at each level gain the powers, feats, etc are already spelled out. I completely understand why they are doing it this way, but I have to admit I was hoping for at least some level of customization. I still plan...

Do we know anything about feat & power progression?

Not really a problem, but there is definitely a inequality of gains for certain levels. Under this system, level 6 is a windfall with a new feat, at-will, and encounter. Level 18 gives one of everything. Again, not necessarily a problem, but I am hoping for a system that spreads things out a...

    DM Screen

My Master Screen (?) is almost 10 years old and I still use it. It is solid, it stands up on its own, and I can change out the information by simply changing a sheet of paper. It is perhaps the best $20 I have ever spent on a gaming accessory.

    SAaving throws?

We don't even know the amount needed to level yet. We can guess, but nothing has been confirmed. Anyway, we don't have enough feats/powers and the knowledge of when to apply them to level anyone up yet.

    WoTC Rodney: Economy of actions

Ding! Summoner: "Okay, I'm going to cast.... Gate. That means I bring in a... hold on, let me check the Spells chapter of the PHB. Oh, no... that won't help. Maybe this? Sure!" Rest of Group: "..." Summoner: "I Gate in a Pit Fiend! Let me look for the mini, I know I have one here...

Help me create a Skill challenge

The skill system is one of my favorite changes to 4e. All you need to know going in is what the end goal is (find the McGuffin) and some ways for them to obtain the goal. My advice is to break it down into bite-sized pieces. The Location: a petty noble has an extensive library that probably...
