    D&D 5E (2014) Point buy vs roll

4d6 drop the lowest, but you do it in order of the abilities.

    D&D 5E (2014) How Old-School is 5th Edition? Can it even do Old-School?

For those on here looking for an “Old School” 5e hack that is rules lite I highly recommend Runehammers “5E Hardcore Mode”.

    D&D 5E (2014) Dynamic start for a 1-shot?

Start mid prison break and the PC’s are chained together.

D&D 5E (2014) Bag of Beans killed 2 PCs, solo bosses suck, and where to go from here....

Give the mummy some goals outside of terrorizing locals and amassing power. Maybe he wants vengeance on the people who mummified him and turned him into a magic bean. I’d also rip off The Mummy and have the ML steal the life force of his victims so he can reach full power.

D&D 5E (2014) Climbing and fighting on a mountain side

Assume the characters have prepared for such an arduous task so all their climbing gear is in good working order. Don’t bother with checks if they are taking their time and climbing cautiously. Do bother with checks if some sort of external threat shows up. Falling rocks, an unexpected storm...

D&D 5E (2014) What is the best class for a single class only campaign?

I love the idea of an all Barbarian party. Just 3-5 raging behemoths, slaying and plundering their way across the realm or protecting their homeland from a more advanced civilization. Even better would be a 13th Warrior/Eaters of the Dead inspired campaign.

D&D General What are your favorite DM Advice Media?

Hexed Press is newer. He deals mostly with OSR type games, but the advice is applicable no matter what edition you’re running. Same with Bandits Keep.

D&D General Woo-Hoo! Heading back to playing D&D in person soon! (for the first time since February 2020)!

I’m thinking of running a one-shot when we can get back together, because the Fireball rule is going to be in effect and there isn’t going to be much adventuring happening. Fireball Rules If a player rolls a 1, all the players take a shot of Fireball. If the DM rolls a 1, they take a shot of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Your Favorite 5e Houserule

    1. Just about everything from Runehammers 5E Hardcore Mode. 2. You have to beat the DC/AC number. Ties go to the defender sorta thing.

    D&D 5E (2014) TOTM and flanking

I switched to zones when our game went online and I don’t know if I can ever go back. Like Robus said, don’t sweat it. In fact get rid of AoO’s and Disengage, and watch how fast combat becomes.

    D&D 5E (2014) Does the Artificer Suck?

Just came here to say that the artificer in my campaign had his spine explode out his back after a beefed up flesh golem overhand smashed his head down into his torso. I guess my point is that, kinda like a bard, they can easily become outmatched when going toe to toe with big bois. My other...

    D&D 5E (2014) Roasting the Paladin

Angry boi Doom Slayer from Doom 2016/Eternal is, to me, the best example of a paladin. Unyielding in the face of evil, even if it means tearing down the establishments that help perpetuate evil. Yes, I am an Oath of Vengeance fanboy.

D&D 5E (2014) Dying and Bloodied: review my house rule

For what it's worth coming from a stranger on the internet, I like what you got. That'll definitely get your players motivated to be on the defensive and to maybe think a little more strategic. I can see a bloodied character, if they aren't careful, slowly being sucked into a death spiral that...

D&D General Letting a Game feel like a Game ~ Mechanics and Simulationism

I'll say this about having DC's out in the open. It very clearly shows the players what kind of challenge their characters are up against and lets them make a far more informed decision about how to proceed. Yes, I do my best to give them as much info as possible about the environment or...

D&D General Letting a Game feel like a Game ~ Mechanics and Simulationism

Oddly enough, no. I'll get a player asking about how badly wounded a monster is every so often, to which I'll reply with a brief description of how it might be fairing. But that'd be far more annoying.

D&D General Letting a Game feel like a Game ~ Mechanics and Simulationism

I give the AC of the monsters only because I got really tired of answering the question of, "Does a 15 hit?" EVERY. SINGLE. TURN. Even though they rolled a 15 last turn and I gave them the same answer. All that's changed is it's sped the combat up ever so slightly. I find something akin to a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Flanking

I'm not a huge fan of flanking, but also wanted to give my players a chance at helping each other out in battle. So the rule is you use the help action on your turn to give advantage to one other player's next attack. I use an open initiative, so players are free to choose who goes in what...

    D&D 5E (2014) Handling mobs

Face palm How did I not think about this? The mob would have a bonus against the spell equal to it's current size (+1 to +5). Save for half damage spells always do a minimum of 1 hit, and if the save fails, max of 2. That being said it may depend on the size of the mob and the level of the...
