D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

Thanks! SESSION PREP It looks like we'll only be playing with 4 PCs. I gave the players the option to wait for Smugly to come back from vacation, but they voted to play. Btw Moss is taking a class, so I think he'll be back in May. Things are grim. Roos, Skarther, and Thalion are near zero hp...

D&D General A thread celebrating The Superior Playstyle

You mean the "pulling it out of my rear" style of play? Indeed, I have mastered the craft.

D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

I admit that I was a little overwhelmed at that moment in the session. I was expecting them to approach the hilltop as group and try some stealth, not just make a mad dash up there. In retrospect, the mad dash was a reasonable reaction because there was a timer in place. Not a good reaction, but...

D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

We'll be taking at least the next two weeks off. One player's going on vacation (Smugly) and another one is taking a coding class (Moss). The PCs are in rough shape, and they still have a hard encounter in front of them. Thalion, Roos, and Skarther are very low on Hit Points. Darsha and...

Winery Resolution / 23 Rounds at Yester Hill Previously: The Gang left Vallaki yesterday morning and went to investigate the Wizard of Wines. They confronted Lady Wacther’s Henchman, who was following them, while leaving town...

D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

I revised The Yester Hill Chapter using notes from "Raising the Stakes" CoS supplement (I donated $5 for it) I enjoyed doing it, but ridiculous amount of rewriting and rethinking. The spacing is weird because it's formatted to be printed. Here it is:

D&D General Which edition handled alignment best?

What's the difference between BECMI vs B/X? They're both three alignment systems, AFAIK. Anyway, I picked BECMI.

Players changed their minds and decided to visit the winery, so I was only half prepared to run this. Also, this was a cakewalk for five 5th level characters as written.

D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

Wizard of Wines Previously: Thalion and Ireena were invited to dinner by the Baron Vargas for uncovering the plot to steal St Andral’s Bones. Other members of the Gang tagged along posing as servants. The dinner was cut short when Izek, the Baron’s Henchman, attempted to capture Ireena...

D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

I changed it to make it clear to the players that she's related to Kolyan and Ismark. I think that naming style would be lost on some of the players and just confuse them. The players are awesome, but some of them aren't always listening especially after a couple of drinks. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) A Middling DM Runs Curse of Strahd

Izek and Baron Vargas Previously: The Gang, Thalion in the lead, was tracking down the stolen bones of St Andral. They had learned that the culprit was Henrik the Coffin Maker. Thalion got him to confess in front of the coffin maker’s shop, where a crowd of onlookers and guards were gathering...
