    D&D 5E (2014) L&L 3/11/2013 This Week in D&D

Like others here, I loved many of the 4e innovations except the power system, which inadvertently killed exploration-based play. Dungeon crawls become dungeon delves. The other things I disliked (feat bloat, frequent choices among too many options) were carried over from 3e. I guess I'm still...

D&D 5E (2014) Legend Lore says 'story not rules' (3/4)

I actually take this as hopeful, since I read it as anti-splat book. They of course need to roll out new player content (classes, specialties, etc.) from time to time. But that is best done in large chunks--PHB 2, PHB 3, etc.--not quarterly or monthly. That will give time for ample playtesting...

    D&D 5E (2014) 2/25/2013 L&L: This Week in D&D

Two thumbs down for a return to wizards healing faster than fighters.

    D&D 5E (2014) 2/18/13 L&L column

The one situation in which I like in-combat magical healing is when someone is down below zero and brought back up. That brings the downed character back to the party and avoids the silliness of the 6 second move + administer first aid action.

    D&D 5E (2014) 2/18/13 L&L column

How is "let groups decide if this is a problem for them" different from "build the game assuming a cleric?" I'm genuinely asking, not trying to provoke.

    D&D 5E (2014) 2/18/13 L&L column

Nor do I have that sense. I was only trying to point out that it's the asymmetry of depletion that makes a heal-bot seem so necessary. It's not a simple problem of damage mitigation vs. damage dealing. It is abstract. And it's not very easy to solve in a way that intuitively links mechanics...

    D&D 5E (2014) 2/18/13 L&L column

So let's say we have a game in which (on average) 4-6 characters go adventuring and, over the course of the day, their resources are whittled down. Sometimes (actually quite often) those resources are asymmetrically depleted for one character. This creates a strong incentive for the group as a...

The Warlord, about it's past present and future, pitfalls and solutions. (Please calling all warlord players)

I just wanted to say that I love the warlord, but it wouldn't in principle bother me if it wasn't it's own class. All depends on the implementation. Can the warlord be a fighter with maneuvers that bolster allies and appropriate specialties? Maybe. I also have no problem with martial healing...

D&D Races and Creatures concept sketches.

I thought it might be cool to have kobolds that look partly draconic, partly dog-like as an homage to the change over the years and adding an element of ambiguity to their claims to be related to dragons.

D&D Races and Creatures concept sketches.

The orc and aaracroka are particularly great. The hair on the gnomes gives them a nice distinctive element as well.

D&D 5E (2014) Things through all the playtests I have not liked

Indeed. Long swords should be finesse weapons for elves.

    D&D 5E (2014) Human racial abilty modifiers

Either way, but it probably makes sense to put it with the race. Then there could be a sidebar about how it would be ok if a human picked any one of these abilities rather than the one associated with a particular class. Well, the goal was to take away that incentive, though like I said I...

    D&D 5E (2014) Human racial abilty modifiers

Since feats are optional and/or will be baked into basic characters, humans could still get a bonus feat that is just fixed (or fixed by class) in the basic game. Then it's just an extra special ability without introducing feat slots generally. As far as ability modifiers, I sort of like the...

D&D 5E (2014) The evolution of Charisma and Wisdom

It's safe to assume that the D&D 6 will be sacred cows except in advanced, optional rules modules. I think it is wise to just take that as a constraint. That said, I have some sympathy with your point. I once house-ruled d20 Star Wars stats to be: Strength - melee damage + Con; could be called...

    D&D 5E (2014) New playtest packet available.

Anyone else disappointed that so much of the stuff discussed in the Google hangout (weapon dice as martial damage dice, etc.) didn't make it in?

[Points of Light Clone] Tweaking the Races

To answer your questions: I think they hit the flavor with elves pretty dead on. In general I like humans as well though the draw of a double-18 led to a lot of Mos Eisley Cantina parties. The halfling racial power always felt flat. Maybe make the attacker take the lower of two rolls? 1. A...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cosmetic Changes You'd Like to See

What are the mostly superficial changes you'd like to see in D&D Next, whether from previous editions or from the current version of the rules? There are a couple things I can think of that would make little difference but would give me some warm fuzzies. I would be very happy if a...

    So, what's going on here?

It might be cool if there was a way to communicate the demand side too, like offering contests/bounties for a creation that meets a particular need. So I might post a thread saying that I would pay $X for the best Essentials-style martial leader.

D&D 5E (2014) Stuff from your favorite edition you DON'T want in Next

I'm mostly a 4e guy (with 1e or 2e a close 2nd). For me it's: 1) Too many choices for decisions that are made frequently. This takes the form of option bloat for feats, powers, and the use of powers in combat. A large culprit here is the sheer number of powers that a single character has; since...
