DMs, Do You Pander To Player Skills?

When I DM I endeavor to the following for each character 10% of the time, you are the character that needs to deal with the situation, without you the party would be very hard pressed to succeed 10% of the time, you are really at a severe disadvantage being who you are. Not a big deal...

    Advice about PC death

If the world is truly "live" the party is probably not the only problem the bad guy has to deal with. The bad guy (or organization) should take a long time to bring the full extent of his/their resources to bear against the party. Or, if it does, that gives some other people in the...

Noticing that an animal is actually a wild shaped druid casting a spell

Specifically, an enemny druid will show up on scene as an animal. His magic items will be subsumed in his form and he'll probably take his first action to summon nature's ally 3. I want to know what the party needs to do to be able to notice that the "Horse" is actually a druid casting SNA 3 in...

Noticing that an animal is actually a wild shaped druid casting a spell

What kind of checks would be involved? Spellcraft? Spot? Listen? I'm not entirely sure what needs to be done for this. Please help.

    Which ranged weapon(s) do(es) your D&D character(s) use?

95% of the time in my campaign it's a composite long bow. The rogue/sorceror has thrown her dagger once or twice. The bad guys have used heavy crossbows, tanglefoot bags, javelins and alchemist's fire.

Clarification of spells with a casting time of 1 round

Ok, so I'm not crazy, but where is that quote from, is the the PHB or the SRD? I didn't find that text when I was trying to make sure I had it correct.

Clarification of spells with a casting time of 1 round

It takes a full round action to cast. But are you actually casting right up until your next turn or is it just that the spell doesn't take effect until just before your next turn. I always thought it was that you were casting until your next turn but now I'm not so sure.

Why Won't Some People Play Spellcasters?

I played a wizard in a campaign that STARTED at 12th level. I did this because the only one of my fellow players I believed knew the spell system well enough to full as crucial a role to a high level party wanted to play a monk. I really held up the group every time the group headed out for...

    Pet Peeves....

While I don't especially like the fact that most presteige classes aren't very prestegious, I've learned to live with it because it gets the players invested in keeping their characters alive to get there. However, my big pet peeves are mostly game play related. As a DM: Spot light hogs...

What is the ideal session length

That is the same for our group. The person who has been most vocal to sticking to the 10:00 ending point is probably bowing out of the game. If that happens I'm going to push for 10:30 for 4 hours total.

What is the ideal session length

Well, our group switched from a weekend day game to a weeknight game and I am not sure we game for long enough each session (about 3 hours sometimes 3.5) So here's a poll..

I'm not getting subcription notification emails

Despite the fact that I am subscribing with instant notification, I never get the emails when the thread has been updated. I double checked my email address in the user control panel and it's correct.

Assigning Gear to a leveled monster ** Al's players STAY OUT :) **

I'll have to think about it. The monster "as is" is one feat, and maybe a couple of skill points away from the prereqs for Arch Mage (that and the specific spells he has to know but that's what the 3 levels of Sor gain him) He is typically encountered with a gaggle of lesser undead as the...

Assigning Gear to a leveled monster ** Al's players STAY OUT :) **

It's a new monster from the MM3. He starts with SR 31 and challenge rating of 15. Adding 6 PC class levels brings the CR up to 21 (3 sorceror and 3 arch mage). A CR21 vs 17th level characters is a very, very difficult fight, but then this will be the climatic battle of the campaign...

Assigning Gear to a leveled monster ** Al's players STAY OUT :) **

I'm not too worried about his saves being unbeatable, he's starting with SR31 before he's leveled. Do I increase his SR for leveling him? An SR of 37 would be disgustingly gross. The party will be about 17th level making it nearly impossible to sneak any spell in. The current SR of 31 is...

Assigning Gear to a leveled monster ** Al's players STAY OUT :) **

Lets say I have a Ak'Chazar Rakshasa that I'm going to add levels to. Specifically I am going to add 3 levels of sorceror (so it will cast as a 15th level sorceror) and then I'm adding 3 levels of Archmage. Since it's character level is now essentially 18 should I equip it with the gear...

What's the biggest challenge / frustration in your game?

Slow combat. It doesn't help that we have a fairly large group (7 pc's) and a couple of people who just can't seem to plan ahead enough while it's other person's turns. I am however looking forward, slightly, to my chance to switch off with one of the other DM's in my group. The party has...

    Random Encounters

I don't do "random" encounters. I have planned encounters that happen quazi-randomly. In my world the "wilderness" is dangerous and overrun by humanoid races and monsters, so the players run into all manner of things as they travel, but I usually have something planned. I have 7 players so I...

What level do you start at and why?

I keep switching back between 2nd and 3rd level. At 2nd level you are still a mook but with a little more HP, and possibly more BAB and a better save or two. You also get to play with your character for a level and have a better idea of what feat you'll want to take at 3rd level. If you start...
