I've decided that all the same class would probably only work for a one-off 3-5 session bit.
I'm going to ask them to all agree on one class from the following races
Assimar
Dwarf
Elf
Gnome
Golliath
Hafling
If they pick Assimar, I'm going to ask them to create Exhaulted characters and I'll...
If it's not laying flat, it's cocked. If I'm DM'ing and a character is very near to death, and the death serves no useful purpose, it may also be cocked.
all rolls off the table, no matter how good or poor, ever count.
The thing is, I'm going to be presenting these options to the group a good month before the campaign starts. So it's not entirely a surprise.
I'm probably going with all the same race after reading the replies on this thread. I'm really surprised with the near hostile reaction the situation...
The why is a gaming experiment of sorts. The more and more I think about this though, I think I'm just going to have it be same non-human race.
I'd kill for the chance to play in a same class game again. I did it once and it was a lot of fun but the DM was the best DM I ever had the privelege...
I played once in an all the same character campaign. It was a lot of fun and quite challenging at times. However, when I present the options to my group (we rotate DM's and my turn is coming up) I'm probably just going with same race (from a pool that doesn't include humans)
The DM's rotate enough that this amounts to maybe a very long one-shot.
So, you would just not participate?
I personally would love to be given these choices. I'd advocate for all Rogue especially if we'd eventually be able to multiclass.
Way back when (2e) I had a DM present to the group...
They owe me, I had to sit through not one, but two, planescape campaigns and I'd rather stay on the same plane as a rule rather than the exception ;)
The more I think about this I think I'll ask them to all pick the same non-human race. Either that or maybe I'll ask them to all be part of...
Actually the DM is going to wait on the final details of the campaign until the group makes a choice. Think of it as a gaming experiment. If it were for a one-shot what would you pick?
See this is why I asked the question, I've gotten some good suggestions and gotchas already
I might actually give the following choices (but I may go with the original proposition)
The entire group must be
All Dwarves
All Gnomes
All Elves
All Haflings
All Rogues
All Fighters
All Wizards
All...
I'm the DM in question, we rotate DM's and I'm thinking ahead to my turn. I think if they went with same class I'd make a tweak to the multiclassing.
You can only take your favored class for a multiclassing option (unless the group class is your favored class) and you can't take a bigger...
I'm going to try to direct the group away from human, I'm hoping to put together something a little different. I might change the options I present to the group to be same class or all the same non-human race.
I'm also planning on starting the campaign in different places depending on what...
The group must either all be the same race or the same class.
What would you advocate for?
Assume the DM is capable of providing a game that would work for the groups choice.
The rule base is just too vast to not have some house rule and I'm talking just DMG, PHB and MM, never mind complete whatever and races of whatever etc..
That being said my current house rules are as follows...
When you roll a hit die it must be at least 30% of it's maximum so for d4 and d6 1s...
I'm running two different groups through this. In the second group the elven rogue is a bit of a selfish scumbag and keeps letting the dwarf go first. The dwarf is making quite the "polish mine detector". They've just started so maybe the group will wise up.
