D&D 5E (2014) The Larger Failure of "Tyranny of Dragons"

Lots of RPGs have no real chance of death or no death rules at all.

How do you find players for non-D&D games?

Get a rep as a good DM/GM, walk up to players who have expressed interest in playing in your game before. Tell them you have a new game starting if they want in and it is X. Say if they're interested, you'll send them the intro sheet. Ask if they know someone else who'd be interested. Rinse...

D&D 5E (2014) The Larger Failure of "Tyranny of Dragons"

Re: Tomb of Annihilation: I lost my only 5e PC in the opening scene. It was a 5th level Wizard with 8 Con who had been revivified previously... Lost more hit points than I had as a total from the curse.

D&D 5E (2014) The Larger Failure of "Tyranny of Dragons"

Cool story. I've been running since 1980 and have often run modules straight.

    D&D Movie/TV New D&D movie details? Vecna?!

Bad sciript, bad direction, and bad acting were stronger contributors IMHO.

    New players: your recruiting standards

    1) Be at least 16, preferably 18. 2) Listen to my spiel about DMing style. Understand I'm not blowing smoke about being disinterested in party direction, not having an expected narrative, and not protecting PCs from themselves or the world. Be comfortable with that. 3) Listen to my spiel about...

    What's the best RPG?

There is no clear 'best' or I wouldn't need multiple choices at the table. They have different feel; they fill different niches. RPG is too wide a category to achieve a 'best'.

    What's the best RPG?

Why? I've run dozens of systems and have at least a half-dozen I turn to depending on what I'm looking for in any particular campaign.

    What's the best RPG?

The one that most closely matches the genre, power level, and table play I want to achieve with a particular game.

D&D 5E (2014) Intelligence and Wisdom Checks (Skills) as GM Tool for Plot Rationing or Expository Dump

"They're mostly for uncovering plot info and, well...the DM has to get that to you somehow." No, I don't. If the players didn't discover it in play and don't have the skills to already know about it, it sucks to be them. Will I use checks as information sources? Yes. Will I use the mere...

    Lagrange Point Question

Possible? Yes, but it would require continual station-keeping. L1-L3 aren't inherently stable points. L1 is on the direct line between Earth centre of mass and moon's centre of mass about 330,000 km from the Earth's centre of mass.

    Dread Isn't for Everyone

One of my players has a palsy. I wanted a system similar to Dread for a campaign, but didn't want to subject the player to a disadvantage. I asked the forum if others had found a solution and suggested a cumulative dice throw instead. The replies suggested the dice mechanic wasn't a very poor...

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

They always have to a small segment of the population. They literally are purported divinations after all. That said, they tend to be generally accepted by the culture at large because they are a common form of mass entertainment. Familiarity had bred acceptance.

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

Heck, start off with "Did you see your Horoscope in the paper today? Those divinations are getting better all the time."

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

The first few years I had my own dice, but it's been like that for a bit more than 35 years now. I don't see it changing

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

I don't bring any dice to my games. I borrow other peoples'. I do have a few polyhedrals in a bag somewhere and most of the games that use d6 have theirs in their box, but dice aren't a vice of mine.

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

I figure he meant what he said. The Satanic Panic hasn't died out completely -- which seems on its face to be pretty freaking non-controversial since literally no alternative theory set dies out regardless of evidence. For evidence of my thesis, I point to the Flat Earth Society. ETA My home...

    D&D General Define Problem

It's a problem if it makes the game unfun This one is always a problem as the purpose of playing the game is having fun. That said, it depends on how one defines "unfun". Impediments and setbacks may not be directly fun, but assessing risk and making the gamble (and paying the price when the...

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

There was a more muted equivalent in Canada, at a minimum. Back in the 1980s, I was seriously accused of attempting to steal souls by DMing and introducing D&D. I laughed at them; I hadn't been paying attention to the news reports about the game. It s after all, a game.

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

I prefer to shout Hastur three times. Eventually, I'll manage to make it stop ignoring me!
