D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

I suggest you read his words. "The Satanic Panic never really died? Guess it didn’t for some!". Then he presented evidence to support his thesis.

D&D General The Satanic Panic never really died?

Ditto? I see only one person calling out people.

When did you bait & switch and how did it go? (Spoilers)

I have in several over the decades. The more egregious tend to be used as cautionary war-stories I post on the boards from time to time. There was a Aftermath campaign set in the Mississippi delta that was actually a dome on a Starlost-style space ark -- despite 1 PC being a fighter pilot with...

What campaigns have you started that didn't work out (and not for bait & switch-issues)

Dozens, at least. A list of reasons off the top of my head: intra-player discord change is real-life situation for myself or key players lack of my enthusiasm or time competition lack of player enthusiasm or attention/time slot competition TPKs (I invariably roll in the open and don't pull...

When did you bait & switch and how did it go? (Spoilers)

And thus you avoided bait and switch. You used the similar technique of "this plus something more that you'll have to trust me on". This tends to work substantially better than bait and switch. Bait and switch gets the players interested in playing a game that you aren't intending to run only...

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

I have in 1e and a slightly modded 3.5e, but that's mainly because I specifically included bunches on non-class oriented things (weighted magic item treasures, NPC followers/cohorts, world factions with power and knowledge, magical effects that grant inherent or very long duration ability) that...

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

The thing I always find somewhat odd about all the times I've seen this discussion is there is little attempt to generate capability in those areas I see non-casters as sorely lacking: discovering things, surviving hostile environments, and long range mobility. Adding combat depth is mostly...

Wife application, you say! My wife won't run any untrusted apps, unfortunately.

    TSR Lorraine Williams, unfairly lambasted?

There are business decisions that are terrible in hindsight. I don't blame her for those. Good faith judgements that turn out to be wrong just spotlight we all operate with limited information and biases. Self-dealing and business decisions that are terrible on their face though I do blame...

Worlds of Design: "Your Character Wouldn't Do That"

People's reactions are unpredictable in real life. Why do you think the DM's guess is better than the player's? If there is a usurping force (e.g. dragon awe is a game mechanic that requires a response), sure. Other than that, leave the character in the player's hands.

Worlds of Design: "Your Character Wouldn't Do That"

Never unless there is an in-game effect that usurps control. As a player, it is one of the faster techniques to have me leave a game.

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

t would be crappy adventure design if the game system didn't offer such abilities like the reality inside Ocean's 11. Since the game engine does include those abilities specifically so the inhabitants of the world can use them to overcome challenges and the game world and adventure should...

D&D General Is character class an in-world concept in your campaigns?

Yes. Each has a differences in how they interact with the world. Those have been noticed and categorized by the more curious people. The difference between a DEX Ranger and a Rogue might be subtle, but those who care can tell them apart with observation.

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

It was the first environmental immunity that popped into my head that I remember derailing an adventure. Environmental effects typically do not offer Dex saves -- I'm talking things like "inside the volcano rim, PCs take 1-4 hp / round heat damage unless magically protected) or "The air is so...

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

There are standard fixtures in games I run too (all the points I made are, not too surprisingly). Games I've played in, not so much. I've been in games where to make the PCs feel "special" (or to reduce the load on the DM) almost no classed NPCs existed which means no spell casting for hire...

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

How often does the fighter breathe water, the barbarian detect the magic portal, or the rogue ignore environmental fire damage? I have fairly consistently seen full casters handle major combat scenes. The game is currently designed such that all classes are decently balanced within the combat...

D&D General Compelling and Differentiated Gameplay For Spellcasters and Martial Classes

By including additional potential dimensions of game play where spellcasters would be naturally weak by genre or at least spellcasters are less likely to want to partake. A few off the top of my head, because I belabour this point continually are: skewed magical treasure acquisition that is...

    EN World The old server

There were a couple of wiki threads I wanted to grab. One was 1e's DMG 1E - List of 1st Edition AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide Appendices Only the 1st post came over and I wanted to see if there were more. The other stuff was in OGRE

    EN World The old server

OK. So we were told it is available, but all I get is "This is the old EN World server, which is closed. The new ENWorld server is at ENWORLD This is the old EN World server, which is closed. The new ENWorld server is at ENWORLD" So, is it supposed to be available still? If so, is it...

D&D 5E (2014) How often do your Paladins actually violate their Oaths?

The game was supposed to be no evil and no PvP action. Other than a quiet word with the DM there wasn't much to do and it's the DM's world. If these actions are cool there (the DM seemed uncomfortable with the actions, but unwilling to take a stand), it's hard to argue a case.
