D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

Following Greg Tito's public comments, it seemed that management pulled funding from them, as he expressed disappointment that the events couldn't be held in the way they had before (once the pandemic had lessened, and not for pandemic reasons but rather management ones).

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

When Ray mentioned this, it was a example, not the sole reason for growth. It is also about younger players. More than half of 5E's players started with 5E and more than half are in their 20s or younger. Gender is just super easy to look at as something that you can double, and was clearly...

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

I'm just reading through this thread. This is a great question. I don't think we know because there are so many factors. The plethora of products in 2E is likely tied to two key factors: that even middle TSR management didn't know when a line such as Planescape was losing money or a specific...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

I'm thankful to Glicker for his 2022 BookScan video, from which I worked up my own Excel figures and put together the blog series that has been mentioned here a few times (thanks, folks!). I am very much a nerd that enjoys trying to understand our industry. I think there are a few kinds of...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

I absolutely like your logical train of thought, but it isn't likely given what we've seen historically. We on ENWorld and gaming internet in general live in a real bubble where we see very clear repeated patterns of how folks buy things, such as on D&D Beyond. But for D&D, the audience is...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

Hi, a friend of mine who follows book sales says the UK BookScan numbers are higher than what you are sharing for the US. That seems to further undermine the US figures, given the size of the book market. Can you check the US "lifetime" BookScan sales for the new PH? Maybe Amazon and B&N and...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

I don't really understand the BookScan number being shared for the first week. While Target and Walmart no longer carry the PH in stores, there are still many sources covered by BookScan that should be way higher than that. BookScan has in the past seemed to me to be roughly 23-44% of physical...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

Hasbro isn't D&D. Hasbro's stock price reflects many many factors, including the incredible losses it has had for eOne and in its toys segments. It reflects the BG3 and MonopolyGo licenses, each at times bringing in more revenue than D&D print books in some quarters. Hasbro stock will never ever...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

And really, they typically have this problem. 2014 5E was staggered for the same reasons of both logistics and to stagger the work. Most editions have worked this way.

D&D 5E (2014) Amazon US book sales rank.

On the Mastering Dungeons discord I pointed out that 2.5k PHB sales in a month is actually low compared to the weekly sales of the PHB we saw on Bookscan. It's hard to compare Bookscan, which usually includes Amazon, but Bookscan had 2,348 sales in a week back at the start of July 2023.

WotC Hasbro's Tabletop Is On The Up Again

But how would ICv2 know the reason... and now? These are Q1 '24 results, which somehow ICv2 is saying are due to an event in Q1 '23. It's a ludicrous claim. The data we have from Bookscan covers Q1 '23 and shows book sales (not counting FLGSs, granted) steady and then climbing sharply around the...

WotC Hasbro's Tabletop Is On The Up Again

Am I reading that this is only a claim by ICv2? I’ve seen no OGL financial impact and no one attributing any other than ICv2. The Bookscan data is pretty clearly not showing any sales decline, while showing a strong rise for the movie’s release and advertising. In recent quarters, it’s...

Cost of D&D Editions, then and now

Their costs have increased substantially. Far larger staff, printing costs are far higher, distribution far more expensive.

Really fantastic work here to pull all of this information together and explain it clearly. I've worked at start-ups and dysfunctional companies, but EGG sounds truly terrible.

D&D General Industry Veteran Jennell Jaquays Passes

What an incredible design and artist career she had. Gave us gifts decade after decade. The Spelljammer art she created, with the nautiloid! Just amazing. It leaves the page and draws you in all at the same time. Her work on the Central Casting series of books was fantastic, and a recent...

What is Success in the RPG Industry?

I try to tackle this question in the Success in RPGs video series. It's very hard to define in creative industries like this one, because so many in the space are not doing this work full time. And many who are have income through a spouse or are simply unaware of the financial needs they will...

D&D 3.x Ben Riggs shares Sunless Citadel sales numbers

These 3E numbers are not good. Even the 5E adventures with the slowest first year of sales had probably about 60k sales. And the earliest/slowest ones often picked up or held steady over time for most of a decade. Storm King, according to BookScan data, had a minimum of 20.5k sales, but to date...

D&D General Ben Riggs Shares 2001 D&D 3.0 Core Book Sales.

This was really the most interesting part for me, because it confirms that the 2E and earlier sales data isn't just the numbers, it is context. You have to understand the history of those numbers and how they were pulled together, and basically none of us understand that. It would be amazing to...

D&D General Ben Riggs Shares 2001 D&D 3.0 Core Book Sales.

It does seem that way. It is a bit different than Ben taking 2001 instead of the first 52 weeks, since he lacks 2000 sales data, but the Bookscan first 52 weeks total is 127k. If we go with the theory that BookScan is roughly 25% of sales, then that's a total first 12 months of 509k, which is...

D&D General Forge of Foes from Mike Shea, Teos Abadia, and Scott F. Gray!

Well... it is something we have discussed. For Forge of Foes, we wanted to have the Monster Powers support the sections of the book, instead of the other way around. We've shared that the Monster Powers in this book are just some of the many I've come up with. So, stay tuned. We may have more...
