Recent Star Wars Saga chat session with designers

In ways we have considered. :-) Sadly, I don't think there's much else we can say about it just yet. I know drips and draps are maddening. Been there myself. But especially as we move forward and work to make sure everything we've done is going to A: Make a good game, B: Work for Star Wars and...

    101 uses for a sword..

A thrown weapon for hunting. Buried solidly enough in the ground he can sit on the cross-piece. Coatrack. Balanced on its tip by a single finger on its pommel, to serve as a wind-gauge. Mirror, looking in the polished blade to see around corners.

    Healing reserve feat?

You might borrow a page from the dragon shaman, and only allow the healing to bring a target up to some % of total hit points (50%, for the dragon shaman ability). That still makes it very useful free healing, but does prevent the cleric from sacrificing one spell slot to heal the party of all...

    Prestige Classes for Rangers?

I just made a horizon walker. I've found it to be much more satisfying than I would have thought. While it does little to expressly assist a ranged combatant, the special abilities it grants are very ranger-appropriate.

    What's the "Perfect" medieval setting?

India, from about 1200 to 1650. These are the eras of the Dehli Sultinates and the Mughal Empire. They represent a time when there were multiple, competing, major and accepted religions (much more common in D&D games than most European knights-and-swords eras), a monetary economy, the use of...

How many characters in your party, then and now?

The only real change in my game groups seems to be a trend toward fewer party-member NPCs, but even that isn't universally true.

    Title for Female Knights

The only suggestion I've seen which hasn't been listed here is Pira, pronounced Peer-ah which is supposedly a female form of Peer (as in, Peer of the Realm). I don't think it's a real world, but it has a certain tone to it, and little attitude baggage. I always used Dame in my own games.

Do Diviners make sense as PCs?

I'm currently playing a diviner/cleric of knowledge god multiclass (working toward mystiuc theurge), using the cloistered cleric and specialist wizard variant rules from Unearthed Arcana. So far the character certainly doesn't seem to have as much game mechanical impact on the game as the...

How do you encourage players to use Level Adjusted races?

If I really want to encourage them, I use the rules in the Advanced Gamemaster's Guide (that's why I wrote them, after all). If I just want them to be a reasonable option, I simply start the game at higher level. In my experience you don't want your LA to be worth more than 1/3 of the starting...

    Most Common House Rules

Although I didn't intend for either of those limitations to be built into the system, I think they're fine and reasonable additions that might well make a lot of people happier with the system overall. Nice idea!

    Is DM fiat okay?

DM fiat is fine. A good DM uses it well. A bad DM is a bad DM, with or without it. That doesn't mean DMs should feel free to run roughshod over players, but done well DM fiat can save time and get to the interesting stuff. In my experience it's best used for minor things, and thenr arely...

    Should Dragon publish mini settings?

To be a success this would need to be handled very carefully. While I'd love it in any form (I trust Jason, Mike and Wesley to only allow in the cool setting ideas), I suspect a lot of readers would only go for it if all the information provided could be used with very little modification in...

    Do you modify classes?

Sure, my whole play group does, within limits. For example, in a game that just started a player with a druid wanted to add a whole slew of plant-based spells from lots of different sources so her character would be less animal-related and more a forestmistress. she offered to give up her naimal...

    Reincarnation, race, and favored class

I don't know that RAW has anything to say about it other than noting the new form loses old racial abilities and gains the new ones. Favored class might be a cultural thing, but it also might represent innate knacks. I believe I wouldn't penalize the character for levels already taken, but I'd...

    Which effect takes place?

I'd certainly let a disintigrate kill a vampire, unless it was important to the plot it survive, in which case the PCs would be warned well in advance it was an exceptional vampire. Even then, it would be out of action for a bit while it pulled itself together.

Help me cover a Tavern Bathroom Wall with Grafitti

The Company of the Red Wand respectfully requests you not use this facility from dusk to dawn on the next night of the full moon. We're exploring the sewers and... We'd just appreciate it if you clenched for a few hours.

Do you give total freedom to your players about crafting magic items?

I normally allow anything from the DMG. Anything from another source requires specific approval, as I don't vet every item in every book before allowing it into the campaign. I haven't allowed scrolls for magic item construction, but I do let two spellcasters work together (if a wizard wants to...

How do you pick your setting?

It was the fact that all my campaigns were homebrew, with ever increasing levels of detail, that caused my wife to encourage me to submit material to Dragon way back when. All my early articles were based in my homebrew campaign of the Sovereign Kingdoms, where the name generator articles I...
