    Blackmoor Lisence Ends

I have no idea what the status of the Blackmoor IP ownership is, but I know I'd like to see Blackmoor materials for OD&D and AD&D (or S&W/OSRIC).

Low ability scores -- more fun?

Yeah, I agree. I read the main DL novels, but I never paid much attention to the game products; consequently, I had no idea they gave him a 10 Con (solidly average). That doesn't sound right at all, from what I remember of the character.

Low ability scores -- more fun?

I think system has a lot of influence on the answer to this question. The more the numbers matter to the game rules, the less likely a player is to accept or work with low numbers, even if they make a PC "more interesting." But if the stats don't play a large mechanical role, players are a lot...

    3 Criteria some? RPG's fall into. :)

How about In A Wicked Age…? From the rules: I haven't actually played a game of IAWA, yet (although I've been wanting to, and did start an unfortunately aborted session), but from my reading of the rules, I think the game probably benefits from player vs. player conflicts.

    What Would You Do?

I wouldn't change anything. The evil wizard runs off to be evil with the evil prince and work against the king, unopposed by the PCs. Let those events take their course. Sounds like the PCs aren't interested, so don't force it on them. Just let the chips fall where they may for the setting...

    Determining Ability Scores

One thing to consider is that the bonus structure in Classic D&D (and LL) is different from AD&D. Keep that in mind when considering the AD&D "methods." For example, in AD&D, you need a 16 Str before you get a +1 to damage, and a 17 before you get +1 to hit and +1 damage. But with Classic...

[The Pool] First Time -- Family Fairy Tale

I ran my first session of The Pool, this evening. This was also my first session of any game with a large degree of player narrative control over the story and the world. (My main game is "white box" original D&D, run "sandbox style," so it's player-driven in that the players have full control...

    2E Retro-Clone?

I agree that OSRIC makes an ideal basis. I suggest a series of bite-sized supplements, releasing finished material often. I'd start with a 2e combat supplement. Finish that, release it, and then start 2e characters (maybe even releasing individual classes as they're finished). By breaking it...

    2E Retro-Clone?

Not that I know of. However, I'm not at all hooked in to the 2e "scene," so there could easily be activity that I'm unaware of. You might ask over in the Dragonsfoot 2e forums. (Also, Dragonsfoot has some 2e compatible adventures/kits/etc that don't use the OGL at all: not helpful for...

    2E Retro-Clone?

I've seen the idea come up, before: Designing a 2e retro clone Inspiration from designing a 2e retro clone thread I think it's come up on other sites, too. As far as I know, no such project has ever gotten very far, but there does seem to be some interest. You'd need a dedicated...

Rant about the cover of the 4e Player's Handbook

You're not alone. FWIW, I'm not offended by nudity or sexiness in fantasy art. I wonder what W.A.R. would do with a Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom cover. My "art direction" for that would be: do your version of a 70s-style pulp Barsoom cover -- just make sure you give me a scene where...

Rant about the cover of the 4e Player's Handbook

Sadly, I think Elmore often suffered from the "strike a pose" problem, too. And he especially liked "strike a pose with feathers." (But its severity pales when compared to Caldwell's compulsion for painting shiny round gems…)

    Storytelling Games

I agree with those who say the terms are ill-defined. I wouldn't say that storytelling games are not RPGs. I think of storytelling games as being primarily concerned with collaboratively telling a story. Because this is just an approach, any RPG could be played as a "storytelling" game, but I...

    OSRIC 2.0 Hardcover = AWESOME

Re: the color version I know that somebody out there put down the cash for a copy of the color version; I have no idea who, though. (Certainly not me!) From looking at the PDF, you can see that the color does look nice, but it's not critical (no full color art or anything). I wish Lulu...

    OSRIC 2.0 Hardcover = AWESOME

This is my reason, too. I have multiple copies of the main AD&D books, but some of them aren't in very good shape. I don't mind *me* using them, but I've been gaming with younger players (my older children, nieces, and nephews), and they're not always as careful as I am. I feel better handing...

Rant about the cover of the 4e Player's Handbook

I don't like "strike-a-pose" cover art, in general. I much prefer "moment in time" cover scenes with interesting stuff going on (action scenes are fine, but I don't mean ACTIONEXPLODINGOFFTHEPAGEALLOVERTHEPLACE cover scenes). For example, I think the original cover of the 1e Players Handbook...

Were you predisposed to enjoy RPG's?

I discovered RPGs about the same time that I "discovered" a love of fantasy and such, in general. I saw The Hobbit on television in the fall of 1977, and I loved it. I picked up a paperback copy from a garage sale for 15 cents and read it multiple times. I found that my father had a large...
