    Confession: I like Plot

I like plot (and story) in D&D. However, I like for it to evolve out of play and interaction, rather than predefined paths or scripts. I usually DM. As DM, I have a good idea about possible plots and stories that might come up (just because of the situation and the hooks I've planted), but I...

    Starting "Old SChool" gaming

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the issue. I use both die rolls and descriptive searching, depending on the situation.

    Starting "Old SChool" gaming

The description for this 1e Thief function is: When running 1e, I typically don't allow Thieves to use 'Find Traps' to locate large construction-type traps like pits and such. (Although dwarves have a relevant racial ability that can help them out.) Other DMs prefer to leverage the DMG's note...

Orcus of Necromancer Games says "You were right, I was wrong"

This is how I look at it, too. I'm not big on "path" adventures where there is a track for the PCs to follow and it's expected that they'll do this, defeat that, et cetera. Consequently, I avoid designs that assume the PCs must overcome a given obstacle or the adventure grinds to a halt...

When Was Your Last 2e Experience?

    Original D&D - Last weekend (ran a game) Holmes Basic - Spring 2007 (ran a game) AD&D (1e) - June 2009 (played at North TX RPG Con) Basic/Expert/Etc - August 2009 (played in a game) AD&D (2e) - Around 1995 or so, I guess (played in a game)

    Is WOTC headed for a TSR-ending? :/

For me, something like that has already happened. With TSR, I found myself not being in step with the style/focus/direction of the products in the 2e period (really, that started in the late 1e period, but I soldiered on for a while). Eventually, I quit buying the new D&D stuff, ran other...

All editions of D&D: What do you like?

The 1e DMG. Except for my very earliest games (i.e. before I owned it), it's been a constant through all the editions I've played. Taking down the 1e DMG and reading through parts of it, or rolling on the random tables, is almost guaranteed to put me in a D&D playing mood.

Would you listen to an official EN World podcast?

No, I probably wouldn't listen to an EN World podcast. (Not trying to be negative, just hoping that some "no" answers might help you figure out what percentage of the user base would be interested.)

    Removing homogenity from 4e

That "this sucks" perception is strongest when you first realize that you're no longer in step with the current thinking or trends or whatever. However, once accepted, that break becomes kinda liberating. In my case, I no longer see it as "sucking" at all. Both of those options implicitly...

How to respectfuly disagree with EGG?

I think the "how" question is pretty well answered… So let's hear the disagreement, man! :D

Which settings (any game, any edition) have the best maps?

Some of my favorites: The old Judges Guild Wilderlands of High Fantasy maps The World of Greyhawk map by Darlene The I.C.E. Middle Earth maps The maps Robert Conley has been doing (e.g. Points of Light)

Should Clerics Have Heavy Armor Proficiency? (any edition)

(I answer based on my game.) Yes, Clerics should have heavy armor. The Cleric class is not a generic priest, but a special type of crusading warrior priest. That is, the Cleric class represents the kind of holy warrior/priest that is most likely to be a PC and go adventuring: the kind that...

    D&D Brand Dilution

I definitely the separate the "game" and the "brand," in my mind. To me, D&D the "game" means TSR D&D. Despite the differences between the TSR editions, I consider the core rules of those editions as being variations on the same game (my litmus test for this is how easy and effective it is to...

What is going on in OSRIC?

I think so. However, it depends on exactly what you mean. Your questions suggest that you're viewing OSRIC as its own game, and I guess that's valid (especially with the release of OSRIC 2), but it's not the only way to look at it. OSRIC is a retro-clone of 1e, and as retro-clones go, it's...

non switchers: what can wotc do to win you back?

I'm interpreting "win me back" as "get me to buy something." I'm not interested in the newer editions, so there's not much hope for WotC, there. I'd buy PDFs of TSR-era products, were they made available (I own a lot of these, already, but there are still some I might pick up, especially if...

    Investigative Skill Challenges

Are you familiar with GUMSHOE's approach? Essentially, in an investigative game, essential clues are gimmes. That is, the PCs can gather the clue without relying on die rolls at all. If they're in the right place or doing the right thing, they get the clue automatically. The flow of the...
