What are the worst classic D&D adventure modules?

Haven't read the whole thread, but the worst ones I've read, run, or played include: Gargoyle Child's Play Dragonlance Classics Castle Greyhawk (WG7) Forest Oracle

    Looking for a new game

Give Mongoose RuneQuest II a look. I didn't expect to like it (being a big BRP fan and having a pessimistic opinion of Mongoose's editing and production abilities), but it's really good. I'm quite taken with it. (Just make sure it's MRQII, and not MRQI.) Another BRP-based option is...

    Looking for an investigative/horror system

Esoterrorists. My first thought was Trail of Cthulhu with the pulp option (instead of the purist option), but I think Esoterrorists would be an even better fit. It's modern, using the same basis as Trail of Cthulhu (i.e. GUMSHOE), and doesn't have the "death or insanity" baggage of the Cthulhu...

Rolemaster vs. AD&D, or 3e vs all other D&D

I confess I only skimmed that. However, I will say that when 3e was released and I read the rules, my very first reaction was "Huh, they took a lot of stuff straight out of Rolemaster." I think you're spot-on with at least that part of your hypothesis. I'm one of those guys who doesn't like...

    D&D 4E 4E Dislike - a hypothesis

I started playing D&D in the late 70s. I see 4e as a well-designed game, but one that bears little resemblance to what I think of when I think of "playing D&D." I wouldn't say I dislike it or resent it, I'm just not interested in it. So I guess my case fits the hypothesis.

What are you doing to keep the hobby alive?

I don't do anything for the sake of "the hobby" (or even worse, for "the industry"). I just like to play games and have fun with friends (and family). As far as that goes, though, I: Play the games Invite other people to play the games Talk about playing the games Write about the games...

    Thoughts on Distance

In the original D&D rules, when a PC built a stronghold he was required to clear the countryside of monsters as the first requirement, with territory "...up to 20 miles distant from a stronghold may be kept clear of monsters once cleared -- the inhabitation of the stronghold being considered as...

Gasp I think I am a grognard now

I got off the carousel at 3.0. Then I took a fresh look and picked the editions that suit me the best.

XP - How do you do it?

I give XP for killing monsters and for achieving goals. About 20% of the XP is from killing monsters. About 80% of the XP is from achieving goals. At least 90% of the time, the goal is "fortune and glory," so the acquisition of treasure is a useful abstraction (1GP = 1XP) that also works as a...

Raven Queen - tell me about her.

Okay, I'll give it a shot. "Her raven-black hair spills like a dark waterfall over her alabaster shoulders. Her full, ample breasts are barely covered by a sheen of magical elven chain mail. Leather leggings hug her butter supple loins…"

Has the Wandering Monster concept died?

I use them, but I'm running one original D&D campaign and one AD&D (1e) campaign, so that's not unusual. I see wandering monsters (especially in the dungeon) as a challenge to player skill. In the editions I run, you get around 80% of your XP from successfully attaining your goal (i.e...

On the brand VS the game...

Well, take Mr. Mearls's statement: "OD&D and D&D 4 are such different games that they cater to very different needs." That's the same thing I'm saying: I think they're different games (substantially, as in "such different games," not just minor differences). Do you think Mr. Mearls is claiming...

On the brand VS the game...

Remove the spaces in the URL (in word 'thread') and it should work. Don't know why those are in there. I don't see them when I paste it in, and can't seem to 'remove' them.

How "deep" into a setting will you buy?

Ideally, I want a broad overview in the core product. And that's all I want. I'll fill in the details and "start the clock" on the setting's timeline from there. I'm about as poor a customer as a brand manager could dream up, other than someone who doesn't buy anything at all. :o
