D&D 5E (2014) How would imposing no stacking of magic affect 5E game balance?

It wouldn't affect balance much--Clerics would quickly learn that bless is useless beyond a certain point, and PCs would make sure to spread around magic items. It would certainly be counter-intuitive and complicated. So the real question is, why would you want to do this?

D&D Surges Into Lead In Orr Group Figures

There are more 5e games than there are 5e players? What does that even mean? What counts as a "player" anyway? Just someone who clicked that checkbox when they made their account? Does this mean that there are a lot of people playing 5e games who aren't identified as "5e players?" Maybe that's...

D&D 5E (2014) A Simple Way of using the Lingering Injuries Table

My homebrew system: Whenever you get knocked to 0 hp, instead of making death saves every round, you roll once on the Death & Dismemberment table. (Results range from "very messy instant death" to "lose a leg" to "just a flesh wound" to "second wind!") All your injuries are healed between...

FANTASY GROUNDS Virtual Tabletop's D&D License!

I get it; it's a premium service. I've spent hundreds on Dwarven Forge because I feel like I'm getting a premium product for a premium price. My question is, what are the features of FG that make it worth the premium? And do all of those features really add up to an experience that's better than...

FANTASY GROUNDS Virtual Tabletop's D&D License!

So, if I want to play D&D 5e online, I have two options. Option 1: Use the free basic rules (or the rulebooks I already have) to make characters and adventures the old-fashioned way. Use a free video chat app (or some other technology I already have) to play. Price tag: $0. Additional setup...

D&D 5E (2014) Sean Macdonald's Prince of the Apocalypse maps. (Spoilers)

I love the maps of the four temples. The strange geometric rooms and angular corridors really remind me of the original ToEE map. And if I'm not mistaken, it looks like they can be joined together to form a single huge dungeon.

D&D 5E (2014) D&D online - one PC cant make next session. What to do

The character suddenly shouts "I have to go! There's no time to explain!" and vanishes in a puff of smoke. Next time that player shows up, make him come up with an explanation.

D&D 5E (2014) Encumbrance rule, do you use it?

Thank you for sharing something I've been looking for for a long time--an actually playable encumbrance system that relies more on "game logic" than exact simulation. I am so going to use this from now on.

    D&D 5E (2014) Did The Finished 5th Edition Change Anyone's Mind?

I'm curious -- What are these "improvements" you feel have been lost? In my opinion, the largest improvement since 2e was the standardized d20 system, which is fully retained in 5e.

    D&D 5E (2014) Would you change a monster's hit points mid-fight?

If a player almost kills a monster (like it's within 1-3 hp of dying), I "roll its hit dice" to see if it's a below-average specimen. I roll a random die, and if it's low, the monster dies. But I suppose that's just a variation of the "roll to see how nice/cruel I want to be" technique.

D&D 5E (2014) Followup on "Everyone Starts at First Level"

I'm also planning a campaign of this same style. I believe it's called an "open table sandbox," and I'm glad it's becoming so popular. For my campaign, I'm considering the following rules: If you're new, you start at 1st level. Basic classes only; no other character options. Roll stats in...

D&D 5E (2014) Princes of the Apocalypse - What I learned from the Encounters PDF (spoilers)

Seems a lot like LMoP (which seemed like a remake of Scourge of the Sword Coast, a late D&D Next Encounters adventure). Those adventures were good, so I like this direction. I guess Tyranny of Dragons was just a practice one. Sounds like a lot of good-old-fashioned dungeon crawling, too, which...

D&D 5E (2014) Spell slots or spell points? Which do you prefer and why?

Deep down, I prefer spell points. Even though spell slots certainly "feel more D&D," the downside to me is that they are terribly specific about how magic works. Sure, that's how magic works in the world of Greyhawk, but maybe that's not how I want magic to work in my world. (Ditto for several...

[UPDATED] Check Out These PRINCES OF THE APOCALYPSE Maps!

It seems they're putting a lot of resources into this campaign. Hopefully it makes up for the shockingly low production value of Tyranny of Dragons.

D&D 5E (2014) How valuable is Tyranny of Dragons for idea mining?

Not very. There are a few good ideas in there, but nothing you couldn't easily come up with yourself (and certainly not worth combing through the 190 pages of crap to find). So far, the most memorable and fun encounter has been "dragon in a small cave with a few minions."
