    What's an "Aragorn Style" ranger?

It all depends on your perspective. I would rather be a medieval peasant than be born poor in some neighbourhoods today, because my quality of life would probably be better. I would certainly rather be born a peasant than born somewhere where egalitarianism was forced by a communist/socialist...

D&D 5E (2014) Reality Check: What 5E Will NOT Be

Though I don't think it will be like the 4e conversion of "G1, Steading of the Hill Giant Chief" where there had to be a slight conversion to the actual floorplan of the original adventure. Or hopefully, a need to swap out monsters or set it to a different level. Converting Temple of...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

It becomes more of a problem with item that have charges (wands of cure light wounds). If the party can keep going forever, then there really isn't much of a consequence in not taking your down time until the wizard runs out of spells. Also, you don't feel ground down and weakened by the...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

Bilge pumps of course. The ship is sinking but the crew pumps the water out and/or does emergency repairs. But this thread is about how to replace healing surges with more "narrative" friendly options. You want the thread "should 5e have healing surges" next door.

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

I presume that having potions do less healing would cause more of a healing potion problem. After all, if you need 4 healing potions to cure you to 100%, then you'll carry 4 healing potions right? I like this compromise because it allows us to keep the "cure spells" intact for the platonists...

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

One big problem with healing magic is that you wonder why bad guys don't use it. The other big problem with healing magic is that when bad guys do use it, combat takes forever and you don't get any healing loot. Any solutions for how to get around this?

    What's an "Aragorn Style" ranger?

Tolkien isn't for everyone. You don't read Tolkien stories for cinematic action, romance, sex or thrilling pacing. You read Tolkien because you enjoy a good slow read and the poetry of the English language. You read Tolkien because you enjoy thinking about deep philosophical, moral and...

D&D 4E PROPS TO PAIZO – On How Pathfinder feels (more like) D&D (to me) than 4E

I think that 3e has some mechanics that are better than 4e, or has assumptions that I enjoy more than 4e. I also think the same thing about 1e vs. 3e, or 2e vs. 4e or anything in between. I never got all excited about defining D&D by its subsystems though. I think "I want to play a...

    What's an "Aragorn Style" ranger?

That's not really the complaint. I think the complaint is that 3 editions now, we could only play rangers as two-weapon fighters or bow fighters. It is more hyper-specialized than it should be.

D&D 4E WotC this is something you absolutely cannot screw up in 5E like you screwed up in 4E

Yeah, definately out of the MM and (most especially) out of the random encounter tables. Dinosaurs and Dragons don't play well together in D&D. Shouldn't this thread have a less inflammatory title like "Use proper Dinosaur names in 5e?" I don't like the beligerance and phrases like this...

    It's not just your father's D&D

There are a few new things in there, but I definately see it as a reorganization rather than a grand experiment (like 4e) or a revolution (like 3e).

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

Hmm... it cut off "so you can ignore healing surges" from the thread title. It must be too long for a thread title. Can I get an thread title edit for this? "Reforms so you don't need healing surges" would be good.

Reforms so you don't need healing surges

I don't think that there is much point debating whether there should be healing surges or not. They are either in or they are out, and given the strong backlash against them, they are probably out. I like healing surges a lot for smoothing out pacing, but I understand why some people wouldn't...

    What's an "Aragorn Style" ranger?

I think people are excited about an "Aragorn" ranger in that you aren't forced to be a dual-wielding melee fighter. You can be a sword and board, or wield a danish axe, or be an archer. Instead of being defined by a specific weapon style you are defined by being a grizzled, shaggy, woodsman...

    Powers dropping out...

I definately hated the unlearning of spells and combat techniques in 4e, especially since those abilities were often part of how you defined your character. It is hard to remain "the dream master" if you have to unlearn sleep. If they do it by cashing in low level spell slots with at will...

Ooh... That's pretty good news too. Damage based on level is much better than damage based on spell.

I'm generally pleased with everything I heard today. Magical items being decoupled from expected character advancement is the best news. The continued use of feats is the one I consider the worst news. If you use them, you can say goodbye to speedy character creation. If you don't use...

That's too bad. Conditions were very functional, and allowed you to easily track what effects people had on them. Of course, this also made reading powers and abilities very "comp sci textbookish". Aristoteleanism vs. Platonism again.

Yeah, I used to be swayed by the argument. But no amount of charisma based skills is going to make an uncharismatic or socially awkward player less so. All it seems to do in actual play, is muffle the more outgoing players while the less outgoing players are nudged into making a diplomacy...
