What are you reading in 2022?

After Parliament of Bodies, I decided to take a break from the Maradaine books to dive into Maberry's Kagan The Damned. (Maberry has several series running; the Joe Ledger series is a fantastic blend of action-thriller and sci-fi/horror - this is his first fantasy book). Good book so far. The...

D&D General How daft was The Senior Baron when he refused to let A Future King marry his daughter just because the guys A Thief and he hates Thieves?

Just because it would result in substantial material and social benefits for the Baron and his family does not mean he's insane to turn it down. He has his reasons. I mean all you have to do is change 'thief' to almost any other sort of descriptor, such as 'Italian', to see how that sort of...

D&D General Was the court Wizard right to Polymorph The heir from A Teenager into A Baby because she knew the villain would kill A Teenager but not A Baby?

Aside from all the gamist shenanigans: Absolutely he was right to do this thing. The kingdom now has a legitimate heir that, in time, will be able to come back and reclaim the throne. In this sort of scenario, little else matters including the heirs wishes on the matter. That decision was taken...

D&D General Cheatin' Bob and the Rod of Power - A Grognard Tale

It's been decades since this happened. Many of the players involved have passed on and some I never saw again after the events of the tale. It might well be that I am the last who remembers the tale. Names have nevertheless been changed. We'd gathered months ago for a specific purpose: to...

    Games with "terrible" follow-up editions

I seem to remember that Gamma World 2e removed the Social Wars as the cause for the 'disaster'. Did they ever restore that?

Then there was T5, AKA The Six Hundred Page Doorstopper Book of Charts and Tables. I'd never heard of HeroTraveller. Apparently neither did anyone else.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

I think it'll resonate fairly well with them given that the take-away here is that to get to the Federation future, every existing social and political structure gets wiped out in the Eugenics Wars and the existential horror of it's aftermath. Looking at Memory Alpha and some other sources...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

I was pretty pleased with it, and I've not been really pleased with a Star Trek show since the first couple seasons of TNG.

    The Batman (spoilers)

This is the only live-action Batman I've ever enjoyed. I had a few quibbles, mainly about my costume preferences and I hope the next two give us as decent Robin at last, but overall I really liked it.

Describe your last RPG session in more than 5 words.

We went shopping in the city and had to fight a runaway Alchemical Skunk, Then later we all shared the reward from that - a lucid dreaming potion - so we could deep-dive into the dream realm, and use my Risen character's memories to solve his murder.

D&D 5E (2024) What if you were in charge of reworking classes for 5.5?

In theory I love this idea. In practice I fear it would come down to the same thing that the early City of Heroes (if anyone remembers that) game faced in early development. For those who do not know, COH was a superhero MMO that, in early Alpha, did much the same thing: you had a basic...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D and who it's aimed at

Exactly. Sometimes think the 'Disneyfied' comments are from people yearning for the bare-boobies pics in early Dragon issues and thinking, somehow, that will come around again. * And until I looked, I had no idea that 'Disneyfied' is an actual word in the Oxford dictionary. To 'cause...

What are you reading in 2022?

Currently reading (and in a few cases, re-reading) the entire Maradaine series by Marshall Ryan Maresca https://mrmaresca.com/wp/novels-of-maradaine/ The setting is a low-magic pre-gunpowder world about at 'Age of Sail' levels of sophistication and ingenuity, helped on in places by geniuses...
