What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

SpiderMonkey: Please excuse me if I’m repeating stated views or misunderstanding your intent: I didn’t read the whole thread. I fail to understand what the sociological (and philosophical) implications of role-playing and a planned obsolescing business model have to do with the study of...

What Would You Like to See in a Pirate Campaign Setting

A real setting that they can skirt the edges of. No, seriously, I have a hard time understanding how a pirate setting can be anything but a fringe of soceity. I mean there would be nothing to loot and plunder otherwise.

Are Any Pre-4e Books Essential Reading?

I think any of the Basic original books are great to leaf through...I remember really liking the Expert rules set. I'd recomend: Rules Cyclopedia AD&D Players, DMG, Manual of the Planes and Unearthed Arcana 2nd Edition Players, Tome of Magic, Thief's Handbook, Paladin's Handbook, Villian's...

Why Do Cover Artists Not Contribute Any Interior Art?

Its also the nature of the game. As an artist you would much rather spend your time productively. Work your big gigs for the bills and then catch the filler work when its slower. Its just easier that way...throw in a couple of deadlines and bang: you only have a single piece in the product.

    Need some help from Philosophers.

Birth is pain. Death is pain. It would be an abjection of nature to live life without pain. The only true path to purity of self, and spirit, is through the discovery, exploration, and acceptance of pain. To do otherwise is to deny life and live an empty shell of an exisistance...

    Steampunk Gaming Materials

Okay, I definately have to second Castle Falkenstein. Specifically, the books: The Notebooks of Leonardo DaVinci and Steam Age. I've also heard that SJG has done a GURPS version of the old Falkenstein core rules...which would probably be quite good considering the original ruleset was kinda...

<Homebrew> The Port on the Aster Sea

I know I'd love a copy of the PDF...I'm a little jealous I live so far away from a group that appears to share my whimsical take on roleplaying. As for the grand heights of the realm might I suggest another mime of the earth below...this time completely made of crystal and glass and near...

<Homebrew> The Port on the Aster Sea

Idea: There are ancient, practical and usable, wells that have been in existance since the genesis of the Clutch. If delved into...far beyond the standard bobbing of water...they emerge in a completely mirrored world know only as 'Is'. Is is completely primal: driven solely by the need to...

How to Play D&D With Your Buddies from Highschool

While I'm more than a little jealous that people manage annual/semi-annual reunions, I did manage to get together with three old gaming buddies from highschool just last summer. I was on a business trip and managed to reconnect with a friend who I knew to be living in the area, another friend...

Do you read RPG books all the way through?

Very rarely. I've read some gaming books cover to cover that were so poorly written that I thought I wouldn't be able to play if I didn't. I've read a couple of gaming books cover to cover that were just plain...evocative. None of the core D&D books though.
