Since the spell only mentions damage, not damage per round, I'm not certain that lengthening the duration would result in more damage.

There ought to be nice things to do with Chain Spell. I know you can chain greater magic weapon to buff all the party (as well as magicking many many arrows :)). There must be other nice cleric spells to chain, too.

How about a level (or more) of Loremaster ? I'd give it to sorcerers, but not to wizards. They derive their magic from study, yet do not study clerical magic and so on. :) Which contradicts and/or is contradicted by the fact that Loremasters get the skill, now that I think about it.
