D&D 3.x [3.5] Halfling with Reach, you like it?

Reach is funny. If trolls can bite people 10 feet away, I don't see why a halfling would need a 10' long spear to do so. Of course, a human with a greatsword should have as much or greater reach than a halfling with a long spear, but he should also have more reach than a large humanoid's bite...

Meta-game reason to NOT get spellcasting prodigy?

That feat doesn't work for me. Who doesn't want to play a prodigy ? What's wrong with simulating that you are a magical prodigy but rolling an 18 for intelligence or paying through the nose to point-buy an 18 in intelligence ?

Why are wizards always getting nerfed?

Okay, then you won't mind if we invent an item that does Fireball at will too, while we're at it ? :)

    Ready Refocus?

Yup. With cyclical initiative, when a round ends and another begins is pretty meaningless. In our group, we use initiative cards and at the end of a large battle, we have no idea when the end of "the round" is.

    [Amusing] Critical Hit on Yourself...?

Yes. In a RttToEE game I was running, a hobgoblin fighter PC was running low on hit points and an evil cleric cast a random action spell on him. He failed his save, rolled "you attack yourself" then criticalled himself dead. It was deemed "kewlest death evar". :D

starting gold, and how it's messed up.

Re: Re: Re: Re: starting gold, and how it's messed up. Wait a minute, I'm just laying the basework to my argument by this time. I agree, but is this explained anywhere ? It depends. If "The Kingdom" is one of the EL whatever encounters your PCs use to gain a level, by the rules...

starting gold, and how it's messed up.

Re: Re: starting gold, and how it's messed up. Here's one problem with this : According to the sidebar on page 54 of the DMG, the encounters necessary to gain a level should yield slightly more gold than neceaary to follow the expected "wealth by level" value. That is, a 6th level character...

[PrC Question] 'Deep Woods Sniper'; the good the bad or just the ugly?

The main useful ability of that class is the improved critical range (now less useful in 3.5 though) and the higher critical modifier. Really ? I thought it was a 19-20/x4 top. At what level do you gain x5 criticals ?

    About that Carte Blanche ...

You could do that in Fallout too, I think.

Does anyone else think full-round casting rules are stupid?

I like those spells because they add another element to combat strategy.

Green-eyed elves only others eye colors need not apply?

High elves had green eyes and brown hair in 1E too, no ?

    Hands free spell casting

In my group, we do worry about it. That is why all the clerics have small shields (or light shields now I guess). In fact, it's been a really long time since I've seen large shields, now that I think about it. Even fighters tend to use bucklers so they can switch to a bow now and then.

    OK, settle the Strength thing.

You're right, encumbrance usually has an effect on characters who suffer strength loss. Most of the adventurers I see are loaded to within 1 or 2 pounds of the next encumbrance category. In the case of the example half-orc character who went from 14 to 4 strength, assuming he had 50 pounds of...

    Fighting a dragon (3.0)

Dragons have an average dex of 10. So do humans. When you go against a human, do you assume that he will have a dex of exactly 10 and can't benefit from combat reflexes ?

    Paralysis, Initiative and You

In 3.5, unless my SRD has errors, hold person contains the following "The subject becomes paralyzed and freezes in place. It is aware and breathes normally but cannot take any actions, even speech." Thus, a held person in 3.5 cannot in fact delay or ready an action, or indeed do any action...

There is no emoticon for what I am feeling

I agree. "Hey, look at that bear that's been following us around. It's eating all the pie !" Barbarian : ""

    Fighting a dragon (3.0)

Which I mentioned in the phrase right after the one you quoted. :) You can't quicken a greater dispel magic though. Hell, a dragon won't quicken any spells because they cast as sorcerers anyway. They can quicken spell-like abilities though.

    Fighting a dragon (3.0)

But the 1d4 rounds suppression only works on permanent magical items that are specifically targeted by a dispel. Why would you need to do that ? Isn't it more important to dispel the dragon's protective spells ? Grab him to prevent him from delivering a touch spell ? :) If your DM hasn't...

    I'm a bad combat DM

Initiative cards are great. When DMing RttToEE, I photocopied and glued to index cards the stat blocks for all monsters in the module. This worked great as whenever it was a monster's time to act, I had all the relevant stats right there.

    Ray of Enfeeblement any good?

You're right about 3.5, but it was that way in 3.0 too. :)
