For that reason, it would probably be better to send them against 2 CR 7 or 8 monsters than one CR 9 or 10 monster. It doesn't mean that you can't do it, of course, but a single CR 10 monster might be very easy or very tough, depending on whether it has area effect or save or die attacks or not.

I don't think you can put vorpal on piercing weapons. This might have been errata'ed, however. Sure, in your case, the two weapons are very good as a delivery system for the poison and death attacks (though that save is not very hard to make at those levels since nearly every monster of CR 18...

Oops, that's right. Scratch my earlier comment on that. If you do get their gear stolen, one solution might be to allow them to retrieve it in time. By the time they do, it will be less overpowering.

Oh, I just thought about something. If the encounter is "theorically" too tough for the PCs, it's possible to make it fair anyway by giving the PCs an extraordinary advantage just for this encounter. This might take the form of allies for that battle, a weapon meant especially to fight this...

I edited my previous post to answer this. Short answer is "probably not". :) Basically, an encounter of equal level to the party is no real risk, but the party should expend about 1/4th of their ressources (hit points and spells, mainly). An encounter 1 level above the party is tougher, but...

The encounter level is +2 every time the number of monsters doubles. For example, if 1 lizard man is CR 1, encountering 1 lizard man : EL = 1 2 lizard men : EL = 3 4 lizard men : EL = 5 8 lizard men : EL = 7 16 lizard men : EL = 9 and so on... 7 lizard men is almost EL 7. The problem was...

Personally, the prestige classes whose goal is to make a cool but underpowered combo viable are those I like best. Then come the classes that are wildly different from base classes. Classes that are nothing but "base class A, only better/more extreme", I couldn't care less about.

Since they are both 5-level PrCs and fit well together, I'd eventually take both, if it were me. If you want to play an Invisible Blade, though, I'd suggest asking your DM to switch the prereqs, since it's a well known fact that those prereqs were determined originally for the 10-level version...

IIRC, most archery based prestige classes do have Spot as a class skill.

Personally, I would buy a pearl of power (level 3) and ask the party wizard to cast Greater Mage Armor with it every morning (armor +6). That saves me 27k for the bracers. With that 27k, I would make the ring of protection +3 (16k) and the amulet of natural armor +3 (10k). With the last 1000 gp...
