My interpretation is that it could make a bite attack, at risk of dropping the warlock. If the bite attack succeeds, the warlock is grabbed again and nothing changes, but if it fails then the warlock is free and the spell works.

I think it's easier in 4e than it is in previous editions, because of a general nerfing of divinations. No Detect Evil ruining things outright, for example. Rituals can still interfere with mysteries, but they're easier to plan for because of the higher cost and long casting times involved. And...

Also, remember you can get two different enchantments on your main and off hand weapons. So it could be worth it if you're fighting something with different vulnerabilities.

Hence why I'm doing a writeup that more clearly distinguishes the CG/LE conflict. This is not meant to exist alongside the existing sytem but replace it for a singular campaign.

The ones that worry me are the infernal powers that send the target to Hell. What happens if you use it on a devil? In hell? Easily handwaved by saying there are WORSE parts of Hell, but makes for some amusing logic gaps.

But there are other dailies that cause unconsciousness, and even monster abilities meant to be used on an unconscious target have to specify that it does not wake up. Also, as has been pointed out this is a spell that actually gets BETTER as you level, instead of being left in the dust like most...
