    A Question of Character...

But they don't define it by what the character CAN do. They look at the rogue and say "it can't be a detective/swashbuckler/club-wielding goon." They don't look at it and say "it can be a dungeon delver/back-alley enforcer/wily trickster."

    A Question of Character...

An odd tendency I've noticed is "can't" gaming. People who seem obscessed with what people CAN'T do. On the one hand, they think that fighters CAN'T have cool maneuvers and over the top powers. Then they want the option to play a rogue that CAN'T be stealthy. It's like characters to this...

Classes ... Much Less Flexible than Advertised

I dunno, I'm a brutally honest person who has never shoplifted in his life, but I'm quick enough with my hands and good at distracting people that I regularly lift stuff from them and return it as a joke. I also find myself sneaking up on people accidentally. It's quite unnerving when you turn...

New screenshots of character visualizer, virtual tabletop

Ugh. Such thing as too many options. It took me several days of tweaking just to get a character whose face didn't make me cringe.

    New Job offers at WotC

I believe the joke is that they will be conducting commando raids on anyone who continues to play the old edition.

    Ice Archon

Thing is, there's not much success. It's still a poor tactic, it's just a one in a million shot that under just the right circumstances, may actually work. I would argue that it's more dramatic and requires more imagination to make such situations rare but possible than it does to just say...

    Ice Archon

That is pretty much how it kills. My example was like that, just on a grander scale, causing the creature itself to rupture instead of just the cells. Under the old system, there would be no way for my situation to ever occur because the polar ray, in game terms, does only cold damage. No...

    Ice Archon

After a good night's sleep, I have a better conceptualizing of an Ice Archon being damaged by cold. The problem was I was visualizing it being uninjured and then suddenly being killed by a cold attack, but any cold attack is likely to do so little damage it'd just be chipping pixels on it...

    Ice Archon

I don't care about reality, as long as I can picture it in a dramatic way I'm fine with it. Hrm... Let's say the archon is advancing towards a white dragon, weapon in hand, ready to strike, and the beast breathes a blast of swirling, blue-white vapors, with a gale-force wind...its movements...

    Ice Archon

I have absolutely no problem with a fire elemental being harmed by strong enough fire. But for some reason, I'm having trouble picturing an ice archon being harmed by strong enough cold. Help me out here! Someone give me a good mental image of an ice archon being defeated by an overwhelmingly...

    Grapple: LIVING SHIELD [mearls]

Could be the bugbear strangler is optimized for grapple (likely) and therefore has special abilities that make him more dangerous in a grapple. One such ability would probably be the living shield one. Otherwise, in 3.x, a grappler was far too vulnerable to attacks from outside the grapple.

Large red dragon mini with only 5 fire resist...

ANYTHING less dense than solid rock emerging from lava breaks down on logical observation. Something that is often ignored because, well, sinking in lava/rising from lava is cool.

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

6'4", 170 lbs. I've found gamers tend to be at the extremes. Very tall, very skinny, very short, or very fat. We're an odd looking bunch.

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

Probably right. It would lead to what you say, though the intention would be good. Maybe if it's highly situational or fully at DM discretion if you got the bonus or not? But you're right, probably best left as a roleplaying suggestion.

Holiday Present - The Elf PHB entry

I'm somewhat surprised no one has mentioned the "elven Characteristics" section. Is this just fluff? Or might there be some mechanical support for it, like choosing one or two characteristics and gtting a small bonus for it?

Effects lasting until the end of the encounter, w00t!

Personally, I think the encounter ends when someone goes "Bah-buh-bah baah baah bah buh bah baaaaah!" Seriously. We do it at my table all the time.
