Speak With Dead: what does "subject to" mean?

Per the SRD and the PHB, both 3.0 and 3.5, Speak With Dead (see below) fails if "the corpse has been subject to speak with dead within the past week." Does this just mean that the same corpse can't be talked to (by anyone)more than once within one week, or does it *also* mean that you can't...

Are there official rules for "lack of sleep"?

I find the simplest thing is to say that sleeping poorly, or not at all, makes one fatigued the next day. Logically, "no" sleep should be worse for you than "not enough" sleep, but I'm not sure this is always true in real life, plus the next step up from fatigued is exhausted, (half speed, -6...

What Spells give the DM the most headache...

That rule ("Any creature with an Intelligence score of 12 or higher can notice the sensor by making a DC 20 Intelligence check. The sensor can be dispelled as if it were an active spell") is still in 3.5, actually, hidden in the Schools of Magic discussion under "Divination."

Well, they have a 19 strength, so they just bull their way through them? Plus they're tentacles, so they curl around obstacles?

    Silence counterspell?

In that case, the question is "Does the verbal component have to leave your person for the spell to work, or is it enough that you said it?" With the side-question of at what point the air leaving your mouth becomes "unattended." :)

Evard's Black Tentacles NEW QUESTION post #5!

They burned a few squares web-free with Alchemist's Fire, but that was before the Black Tentacles hit. Afterwards, it's really hard to make fire (they rely on Continual Flame and Darkvision for light, they were out of Alchemist's Fire and retrieving it would have required a Grapple check in any...

    Level Progression

I'm one of those "old-school" guys who thinks third edition levelling is too rapid, and wants the pace of progression to slow down at higher levels (like it did in the "old days"), so I've tried various xp-adjustment tricks. My current one for 3.5: Calculate XP for each character by the book...

Evard's Black Tentacles NEW QUESTION post #5!

In my experience as DM and occasional player, Black Tentacles is nigh-deadly against any non-teleporting corporeal opponent of less than the caster's level, and against primary spellcasters of most levels if they can't Teleport (or Dispel Magic stilled or spell-like). This does assume that the...

Contingency: what does "affects your person" mean?

I tried to sneak this into another thread, but no responses, so.... Contingency (text quoted below) is range "Personal," target "You," and the Contingent spell "must be one that affects your person." Does this mean: A: It only works on spells that target a single individual, such as Shield...

DMs Help ME Sorcerer Just Picked Contingency!

Any I thoughts on my "what does 'affects your person' mean?" question above? I had some editing troubles, so folks may not have seen it on their first pass.

DMs Help ME Sorcerer Just Picked Contingency!

Contingent Spells: what does "affects your person" mean? I was just about to start a Contingency thread, but why duplicate effort? :) My question, which may also be of interest to the original poster and the Sorcerer in question: Contingency (text quoted below) is range "Personal,"...

    Silence counterspell?

I believe this to be incorrect; or, if correct by the RAW, against the designer's intent, and thus in need of a good swift Rule-0. ;) The Area or Object doesn't get spell resistance, and if cast on an Object you don't get to make noise with the Object using your Spell Resistance, but I'd...

    Fiery Dragon's plans for 2004

Let's see: - Chromatic Dragons show up a lot more frequently than Metallic in most campaigns, so I'd concentrate on them (though you still ought to have at least one of each color of Metallic dragon, perhaps the "Adult" size). - Dragon species all seem to come in 5-6 size categories each...

    Fiery Dragon's plans for 2004

Thanks for the quick response! You gave me exactly the information I was looking for, as I was considering ordering one or both from Warehouse 23 (which lists them both as coming out March 15; might want to have that updated), but now I know not to order Gold yet (it would slow down the order)...

Celestial Brillance and Earth Reaver troubles

In my opinion, Celestial Brilliance is badly overpowered, mainly because it's portable and lasts for hours (or is it days?). In my campaign, it can only be cast on an area, not an object, so it's not portable. It also really should be a divine spell rather than arcane.
