How wide is a "line", i.e. Lightning Bolt?

One of the really annoying things about the new "line" description is that it's only of use if you are, in fact, using a battlemat or similar graphing surface. If you aren't, and just want to know whether a Lightning Bolt can affect two people defined as standing 5' apart (and not one behind...

How wide is a "line", i.e. Lightning Bolt?

Caliban and Jhyrryl: Thanks for the great diagrams! It occurs to me that I may be mistaken about a Lightning Bolt "line" being 10' wide, even though it affects a coulmun 2 squares wide. At 5' wide, if you cast it down a square-side, it fills up half of each "touched" square, affecting both...

How wide is a "line", i.e. Lightning Bolt?

Lots of interesting replies here; thanks! As I noted in my original post, the MM 3.5 lists a Dragon breath weapon "line" as being "5' wide and 5' high"... but it also lists a Dragon breath weapon "cone" as being "as high and wide as it's length," rather than a quarter-circle like a 3.5...

How wide is a "line", i.e. Lightning Bolt?

Where "goes through" includes "touches an edge or corner?" That what I *think* it means as well, although as remarked that could include the caster's own square.

How wide is a "line", i.e. Lightning Bolt?

The 3.5 rules introduce a new standard spell area type, the "line," for such old standbys as Lightning Bolt. Unfortunately, the SRD and PHB descriptions of a "line" are confusing, written entirely in "squares" terminology, and leave me *guessing* that a "line" is probably meant to be 10' wide...

Glove of storing costs 10,000 gp?

I agree that 10,000 per *pair* would be more reasonable than 10,000 per *glove*, but I also agree that the price needed to go up somewhat, since Gloves of Storing are now the *only* retrieve-an-item-as-a-free-action storage device (Handy Haversacks now take a move-equivalent action (but no AoO)...

Why do we give a legit toy company a bad name?

But Nerf tm isn't "a legit toy company." It's a brand, owned by... Hasbro! (http://www.hasbro.com/nerf) Makes you think, doesn't it? :D

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Errata Reporting

The Talisman of the Sphere is now a Minor Artifact (which makes sense to me, since it's only function is to control a Minor Artifact, except perhaps leaving it lying around as a nasty 5d6 "practical joke" against people who can't cast Arcane spells :D) and is listed with them. As such, it...

    D&D 3.x [3.5] Noteworthy spell changes

Planar Ally/Binding have been toned down: Instead of Lesser/normal/Greater getting you 8/16/24 HD, they now get you only 6/12/18 HD. Combined with the general increase in HD for many Outsiders, this seriously reduces your options, especially for Lesser Ally/Binding (see...

    Lesser Planar Ally/Summons: what's left?

Not as many combat-worthy choices as there used to be, though, especially among the Demons and Devils, which as a DM I regret (my CE and LE NPC Clerics were just starting to make good use of Lesser Planar Ally). All that's left from the Demon list are Dretches, Quasits, and Succubi, all of whom...

    D&D 3.x [3.5] Metamagic Rods

I thought the plural of "erratum" was "3.5". :D

    Lesser Planar Ally/Summons: what's left?

I see that "Lesser Planar Ally" and "Lesser Planar Binding" now Call creatures of up to only 6 HD, rather than 8. And many outsiders have had their HD increased. So, anyone have opinions about what's left that's worth Calling?

    Resources for a Darkages campaign.

You could try Lisa Steele's "Fief: A Look at Medieval Society from it's Lower Rungs," available as a PDF from Cumberland Games at http://www222.pair.com/sjohn/fief.htm. Some of White Wolf's Dark Ages Vampire/etc. stuff isn't bad either, and might be adaptable (Dark Ages Europe, Spoils of War...

    Forcecage Question

A portable hole's interior is a 10'-high cylinder with a diameter of 6' (= 3' radius). The volume is therefore 10' times pi-r-squared = roughly 282.75 cubic feet. If that much air lasts 10 minutes, then 1 cubic foot should last approximate 2.1 seconds, which seems rather low. Then...

    D&D 3.x [3.5] Potion Identification

Isn't that "tastes like almonds" paragraph taken directly from 3.0? It was optional then; is it the default now? In 3.5, Spellcraft will identify a potion: "DC 25 Identify a potion. Requires 1 minute. No retry."

At the moment, the All-in-one zip file still has the 3.0 SRD. All the individual files are 3.5, though.

    New SRD available

Definitely looks like the all-in-1 isn't converted yet. And in the piece-by-piece, the link for "Spells (P-R)" points to "Spells (S)".

    Arcane Archer Ability Question

This (plus the new Ranger) also means that, in 3.5, the first level of Arcane Archer is generally inferior to a level of Ranger, assuming the character has at least a +1 bow (fewer skill points, same HD, smaller skill list (I think), comparable saves (though if you already have Ranger levels...

Rant about (lack of) info in new 3.5 conversion guide

Are you saying that you don't expect the 3.5 SRD to contain, well, the actual rules??? If so, that seems unnecessarily cynical. It won't specifically say "Bards used to have 4 skill points, now they have 6," but it'll say "Bards have 6 skill points," which is what you need to know...
