No, since we're talking about squares, it would be "the beast with four backs." Heavens to Betsy! (Good thing this isn't GURPS, with hexes...)

    Warlords Heal?

It's occurred to me more than once that PCs are not unlike Highlander-style immortals. They kill things and take their stuff, including XP = "life energy" = hit points (eventually).

And let's not forget Tiamat! Boy, can she give... nevermind. :]

    New Design and Development: Pantheon

Well, there's the default 3e pantheon. In which a love-starved male deity looking for an equal female partner gets to choose between Wee Jas and Yondalla (both of which choices are kinda squicky, for different reasons, though in my campaign Hextor and Wee Jas are a couple). I'm not counting...

D&D 4E Does anyone agree with me about 4E?

Neither you *nor* Halle Berry were the best Catwoman ever. IMHO.

    D&D 4E Rant on the 4E "Presentation"

I only know one person who tried to play 3.5 while using a 3.0 PHB; however, as a DM, I've frequently used 3.0 sourcebooks and modules in 3.5. My intended point, however, was that it has not been "a couple of" (i.e. 2) years since 3.5. It's been over 4 years, and by the time 4e is out it'll...

    D&D 4E Rant on the 4E "Presentation"

I know it doesn't feel that long, but 3.5 came out in July 2003, so it's actually been around for over 4 years. By the time 4e is out, 3.5 will have been out for nearly 5 years, and it will have been nearly 8 years since 3.0. So, comparable with the lifespan of 2nd edition.

Is 4th edition getting soft? - edited for friendly content :)

If you haven't read ENWorld's 4E summary page (http://www.enworld.org/index.php?page=4e), you really ought to do so. Here's it's summary of the article in question: === "The Core Mechanic" deals with the "roll d20 plus modifier to beat a target number" dice roll which is the core of the system...

So what's gold gonna be for?

The main counter-example I can think of is Buffy (the Vampire Slayer :) ), who had fairly regular training/practice scenes through at least her first 5 seasons (she kinda slacked off in Season 6 (though "Once More With Feeling" featured an honest-to-Joss training montage), and spent Season 7...

So what 3E adventures were worst?

As I recall, Speaker in Dreams actually had a pretty substantial web enhancement. Didn't change the plot, but it gave more city details, encounters, and NPCs.

All of OP's concerns would be moot if his characters all carried scrolls of <spell> , like any sensible adventurers.

    D&D 4E Rant on the 4E "Presentation"

Personally, if someone gave me a two-hundred dollar bill I'd be inclined to complain. ;)

So what's gold gonna be for?

Been there, doing that. As I expect you've noticed, if you don't cut down on the treasure, this will tend to make your PCs become vastly over-equipped for their levels (compared to RAW expectations).

So what's gold gonna be for?

Presumably, not everyone *can* be a PC class. But the original question still holds even if you restrict it to PC classes, or still further to "adventurers": why aren't most of them 20th level? "Because 99% of them die permanently before they get that far" is a valid answer, but doesn't bode...

Actually, I forgot that the 3 survivors will take and use their companion's stuff, so it's actually less than 25% resource expenditure. ;)

So what's gold gonna be for?

What always blows my suspension of disbelief is: If an "elite" person can make it to Level 20 in, say, two years, surely a regular person could do it in, say, 10 years. That being the case, why isn't the (adult) world mostly populated by 20th+ level characters? Especially when you start...

Oddly enough, if you look at it right, the Bodak *might be* balanced for CR8. It'll probably kill 1 member of a 4-person 8th-level party, but it's unlikely to injure the rest, and they probably kill it without expending much in the way of other resources. 25% fatalities + no other expenditure...

So what's gold gonna be for?

Certainly, we should focus on the non-trivial similarity between Big Bird and Godzilla. As Harry Knowles (of Ain't It Cool News) would say:: MANINSUITMANINSUITMANINSUITMANINSUITMANINSUITMANINSUITMANINSUITMANINSUIT!

However, if you do that to (for example) a sword, it's going to tend to be a lot less useful afterwards, both because it'll be structurally weaker and because it'll probably have changed shape while it was softened.

To be fair, that's if he wins initiative over the whole party. It's more likely than not that the party wizard and/or cleric gets initiative over him, in which case they might save-or-die *him* instead, with rather higher chances of success. Yes, "wasting" a SOD on a level-4 foe might seem...
