A leveling way to limit access to magic?

I'm using a similar system and it works quite well. You have to ban certain prestige classes such as the mystic theurge and the eldritch knight. I think this is another effect of the system. Not only will spellcasters be weaker, but some players that would otherwise play a spellcaster will...

    Order of the Dodecahdron Initiate

Why eight ranks? Why not 5 or 12? Let's see, a 5th level human rogue with 16 int has 96 skill points and three feats. But they don't qualify because of the greataxe proficiency. So a human rogue 4/ranger 1 with int 18 can just barely sqeak in. That's some requirement. That's some powerful...

Making a spellcasting Balor - help with CR

A Balor (CR20) that can cast as a cleric 24 (CR24) would probably be +2 or +3 above the cleric's CR, so CR 26 or 27.

    48-point buy

Thanks for all the replies. I'm thinking of going with a choice of: 1. The array 18, 17, 15, 13, 12, 10 2. Roll 3d6 for each stat and then turn one of the dice into a six A quick Excel spreadsheet shows the average point buy value of #2 is 47.3, or in other words, close enough.

    BattleStar Galactica:Season 3.0--10/06/06--Arc 1

I don't care if the child thing is new to the series, I still don't like it. I didn't like it when it was Baltar and Six, I don't like it now. I keep hoping they can do something original, and not rehash the "aliens are stealing our women" plots that have been done to death for ever and ever.

I only wish the cheetah species was "doing fine". It is more like "on the brink of extinction".

    48-point buy

We are planning a campaign where the characters are the ultimate heroes of all ages. For stat, we are planning on using the "super elite" array of 18, 17, 15, 13, 12, 10. This comes out to 48 point buy. How ridiculous is a campaign run with these kinds of stats? Is there any stat rolling...

Three "Guaranteed 18" methods of random stat generation

How about: start with an 18 and then roll 5 more stats. Or Start with an 18 and an 8, then roll 4 more stats. Another option would be a high-level point buy (36?) but require at least one 18 (and perhaps one 8?).

    BattleStar Galactica:Season 3.0--10/06/06--Arc 1

I think it is absurd because (1) why is Starbuck so important they didn't use the other woman's eggs, (2) if they have Starbuck's eggs, why do they need her to mate with the cylon dude, (3) the girl looks way too old for the time line [compare with Boomer's baby that was conceived before hand]...

    BattleStar Galactica:Season 3.0--10/06/06--Arc 1

My problem is the genetics. Can 2000 people offer enough genetic diversity to save the human race? 40,000 was questionable enough, but 2000 is really pushing it. So I agreed with Adama's plan. He had to go back and try to save the remaining people, and he had to try to save the remaining...

    Alt Tumble rules

There's a difference between BAB and total attack bonus. I agree, total attack bonus is too much. But 10+BAB is a good target. The rogue can get ahead of the fighter based on the initial first level +3 ranks, the +2 synergy bonus from jump, dexterity modifier, and skill increasing items...

What percentage of your campaigns have good conclusions?

Feels like 0%, but could be as high as 25%. Campaign 1: Ended because DM got sick of high-level D&D. Campaign 2: DM lost interest after about 10 sessions. Campaign 3: Ended after a triumphant battle. Usually this would be okay, but no one in the party knew we had finished the campaign, and we...

Why post in House Rules if you think everything is fine?

    Alt Tumble rules

By the standard rules, that's not true once the rogue in question has +14 on his tumble check, which in my campaigns is about 5th level (8 ranks, +2 synergy, +4 dex). Once you have +14 tumble, the kobold and the pit fiend hit you exactly the same percentage of the time: 0%. And they do exactly...

    Got your Back

With combat reflexes, you can make attacks of opportunity while flat-footed. Since combat reflexes is a prerequisite, you might want to just remove that restriction.

    Alt Tumble rules

The counter example is intimidate. It is a skill and is opposed by the opponents level or HD. Levels and Hit Dice represent a lot more than even BAB, yet still you have to keep sinking skill points into Intimidate to "keep up". In the tumble check vs 10+BAB variant, each skill rank you put...

    Alt Tumble rules

I see a few problems: 1. You end up double counting Dex: once in your normal AC, and once in your tumble check. Anyone with a high Dex gets way more out of a skill rank in Tumble than taking the Mobility feat. 2. The tumbler eats up an attack of opportunity from the opponent. So one tumbler...

Define Core Only for your game

My core rules only game has the players using only PHB options (no MM races or feats). As DM, magic items and monsters from non-DMG/MM are used sparingly.

Input on a New Spell System

Funny but in every campaign I've played in, not one wizard has ever used that rule. They were too worried that having an empty slot meant less fire power. But even with that, this system could be modified to allow one slot per level to be "open" and filled as needed in the day. It's just that...

    Best(?) Second Level Bard Spell

I'm surprised at the lack of love for Heroism. Glitterdust is very good too.
