Your role? Nothing matters but combat.

All what is done during a Role Playing Game session is roleplay. Like "boardplay" is what is done with a "boardgame". That includes using resolution mechanics (rolling dices), doing narration, acting and so on.

Your role? Nothing matters but combat.

Grrrrr. You can roleplay in combat, not roleplay outside of combat, the nature of actions taken (combat, diplomacy, clues finding, whatever, etc.) is completly irrelevant to roleplaying. Roleplaying is when narration, acting, etc. is added on top of dice rolls. No role/rollplay dilemna ever...

    Xp question for WotC folks

My examples are not perfect, because the player with the lower level character is penalized vs his teammates more than vs the opponent. It would be more like giving poor equipement to a player in a team-based sport or hurting him before a game.

    Xp question for WotC folks

XP for "acting in character" has no place in D&D, I agree on that. However, arbitrary leveling is IMHO a bad idea because XP is first and foremost a reward for sucess against challenges.

    D&D 4E Got to play 4E today

The important stuff that is happening in the shared imagined universe should be narrated by the players and the DM, that stuff being combat or diplomacy or clue finding is irrelevant. That narration can occur before and/or after the roll is made, describing what is attempted and the result*...

Would you play poker with only 4 cards or chess without your rooks at the start of the game ?

    D&D 4E Got to play 4E today

It's not WoW that you have missed to understand something like 4E skill challenges, but all the modern (post AD&D 1E era) RPGs development. Don't assume that the AD&D 1E definition of what is a Role-Playing game is the end of all thing. Playing a "Guess what the DM wants" game to handle a...

    Xp question for WotC folks

The basic idea of playing with character of different levels is incoherent (except maybe a -1/+1). That doesn't mean that an RPG can't come up with a way to handle playing the LoTR main characters.

    D&D 4E Diseases and other long-term penalties in 4E

Not handled at all ? Diseases are boring.

    D&D 4E 4E French Edition announced!

I'm from Québec and I would never even think about buying the French edition. One of the reason is the France French feel. Pit Fiend -> Diantre fosse in 3.x was my favorite ! But, even with an International or Québec French feel, I would still probably use the English original version. If it...

    DMG Excerpt: Customizing Monsters

Before someone complains that Vampires are no more killed by Sun light, recall that Dracula wasn't ;)

Scrying - Does it have to be a problem spell?

Scrying + Buffing + Teleport as the no brainer tactic is the problem.

Very bad example. SKR and Rich Baker are the 3.x era designers hated by FR canon fanatics. A good example would be Eric L. Boyd, who has vanished from Candlekeep boards and got his name on the 4E FR Players guide... ;) I bet on Bruce Cordell (lead designer of the FR DM guide) to be the next...

I would add that it's even worse in settings foremost defined by a strong story, think Middle earth, Star Wars universe, Krynn, etc. But the quest for the "true Greenwoodian" feel/genre/themes is also difficult to beat ;)

The saddest edition change job is ToT (AO  ). The ugliest is 3.x retcon (not that I have a problem with well-done retcons, such as Batman begins). I have reasons to hope that the Spellplague one will be the best (perfect ? No).

The problem with the Weave under 1e/2e/3e is that it never changed anything significant in the game. 4E could have go both ways : make the Weave significant or kill it. I could say they went for the easy route, but either one was better than statu quo IMHO.

First, it is not a retcon, the Spellplague has caused the changes in the cosmology. (Yeah its a far stretch!) Second, who cares ?, that's how the 4E FR pantheon is built to make it help players & DMs have better D&D games.

IIRC, it was established in his initial contract with TSR when he sold them FR. I have read messages from FR authors like Steven Schend and Elaine Cunningham that said "Contrary to Ed, I can't answer those questions, etc." Now I'm sure Keith Baker didn't get the same. BTW, I consider myself a...

I strongly reject the current overall attitude of the Candlekeep community, but I'm pretty sure that what Ed writes there is canon until contradicted by a WoTC product.
