Trip is an Encounter Power now

In elite mixed martial arts, it's not as easy to trip someone as you might imagine. Sure, it's relatively simple for a karate student to walk up and trip an average guy, but elite fighters, it doesn't really work like that. Not only are takedown attempts tough to come by in mixed martial arts...

    Tactical Boardgame?

    1) I haven't formed an opinion about that. 2) That's irrelevant to my point.

    Tactical Boardgame?

What's the point of starting a thread with the sole purpose of disparaging a number of people's opinions? There's a way to have this sort of discussion, but this certainly isn't it.

    6 players, 5 hours, 4th edition

Just let it go. It's not worth starting an argument about.

FR to look like a Roger Dean painting

I'm very apprehensive about this. One of the first things about the 4E Realms that I really don't like.

    Design & Development: Halflings [merged]

I like the stuff about halfling warlocks. In my world, halflings are a product of their physical disadvantage. After all, they can't afford to wage traditional battlefield war against the larger races without a significant numerical advantage, which they've never been able to achieve. So they've...

    Races of YOUR World

My PC races: Humans Dwarves - Some Mongolian flavor to spice them up a bit. The most populous race after humans. Elves - I want a bit of a Native American feel, but without going nowhere near making them Native Americans with pointy ears. I think there's some interesting elements that can be...

Paladin should kill the Warlord and take his stuff!

The paladin taking the warlord's stuff wouldn't bother me. The more I think about it, the more it seems the fighter, paladin, warlord, and cleric are treading some of the same ground. Other classes taking the paladin's stuff wouldn't bother me, either. I think I should be able to make a good...

Bard Arcane Leader and gnome bards and roles

Cool. Where have you read that?

Bard Arcane Leader and gnome bards and roles

I think the 'trained in Arcana' was merely referencing the character taking an extra specialization in the Arcana skill. From what I think I've read. SWSE's skill system allowed characters to designate a certain number of skills as trained.

Andy Collin's comments re censoring playtester reviews

I'm not a fan of this, but I'm not gonna get worked up about it. I just don't like it when companies try end-arounds like this to try and drum up my excitement.

Countdown to the Realms: Magic in the Forgotten Realms

I'm not a big fan of warlocks as a core class, but the following quote has made me nearly change my mind: That's the best possible way I could imagine to introduce warlocks into a world. Very cool. I also really like the sound of the spellscars. I hope they pull off some interesting mechanics...

D&D 4E My First Scoop - info on 4e Gnolls! [Morrus, is this news worthy?!]

I absolutely agree. I'm not sure, though, how much I want to see them go the devil-ish route but I'll wait and see what WotC does.

    History repeats itself

Is this one of those threads where I can use thinly-veiled sarcasm to disparage those that disagree with me? I love those.

    It's the Actions Economy, Stupid!

No, I'm very fine with magic items increasing power. They'd be boring and pointless if they didn't. My problem is with the idea that 4E secondary magic items won't increase a character's power, that you can therefore remove them from the game if you want to reduce the Christmas Tree effect and...

You're right, I'm certainly making that assumption. I feel pretty safe with it, too.

    It's the Actions Economy, Stupid!

If the wand of fireball is effectively replacing a wizard's magic missile in his suite of powers, then absolutely that's not balanced in the encounter sense. You said as much. You said that secondary items won't affect encounter balance as long as they're not out of line with class powers for...

    It's the Actions Economy, Stupid!

I meant for my examples to be 1/day powers that would last for one encounter. I'll edit that post. The general point, though, still stands.

    It's the Actions Economy, Stupid!

Another stumbling block: Let's say as a 1st level fighter I learned a power that gave me 1/day minor action that let's me increase my AC by 1 for one encounter. Later, at 10th level, I learned a power that gave me another 1/day minor action that let's me boost my strength by four for one...

    It's the Actions Economy, Stupid!

Nor did I. The theory behind the thread is that secondary items will be fine as long as they're balanced because they're replacing existing actions with different, equal actions. It's options, not power. My point is, I don't think that balance is possible, let alone a reasonable expectation...
