Using Sneak Attack to power non-damaging abilities

The Mastermind rogue archetype (SCAG/XgtE) does some of this already - maybe tweak that? [edit] Also the Inquisitive?

    Quick summary of published campaigns?

Do Lost Mine of Phandelver first. The others, it's too late to prepare adequately if you only have a couple of weeks before you start [edit: assuming you have other things to do as well, like work etc.]. Seriously. You need to read the entire 300-odd page book, probably twice, do some filling...

Social skills vs. ... all other mechanics

There is a divide for social skills - yes. That's just the nature of the beast. I wouldn't penalise a player who gave an unconvincing speech, but I would grant advantage to a player who made a highly convincing speech or argument, either in terms of content, delivery or both.

Social skills vs. ... all other mechanics

The player is in the right there. As DM I always ask for more specifics, when something like that could occur. "How do you investigate it? Are you touching it?" I do this even when there is no harm in touching the object, to prevent players automatically fearing the worst if I ask a leading...

Social skills vs. ... all other mechanics

One other thing - if you want a more involved and detailed interaction, try something like the Audience rules from the Adventures in Middle Earth 5e supplement (Cubicle 7). I've not used it, since my players are too old school to refrain from looting bodies and trying to kill every last enemy...

Social skills vs. ... all other mechanics

For me, D&D is meant to be fun. A blast. For that reason I try to encourage players to play characters suited to the personality of the player so they don't get caught out of their depth or forcibly taking a course of action when the player is itching to do the opposite. My players ain't...

Survivor D&D Computer Games- Baldur's Gate WINS!

Baldur's Gate 27 Baldur's Gate II 19 People say BG2 is better. I enjoy BG1 more. I guess something to do with starting from the beginning. To me, that makes BG1 'better' and so it gets my vote.

D&D 5E (2014) [SPOILERS] Enhancing Tomb of Annihilation

Inspiration doesn't give a re-roll - you expend it before rolling to gain advantage on the dice. Not sure if you did that, or maybe you house-ruled it to allow a re-roll to go easy on your players. Or maybe, just maybe they SHOULD ALL RIGHTFULLY BE DEAD.

How old were you when your first GMed an RPG?

The one I remember, I was 10 or 11 I think. I was on a summer archaeology dig with my mum. I DM'd Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan for three university students. They all died in a fireball trap corridor after a few hours play, and one guy was none too pleased about it! His friend said "C'mon he's...

D&D 5E (2014) [SPOILERS] Enhancing Tomb of Annihilation

We've only done one session in the jungle and I'm already bored stiff with the mechanics although I think the players are OK with it for now. I much preferred DMing Princes of the Apocalypse. They are at Camp Righteous (dying horribly, I even let a player off a perma-death by allowing his last...

Guidance Cleric cantrip is really dumb

I would go the opposite way of the handwave suggestion, and encourage the player to offer up a suitable IC prayer to his or her deity in order to bestow the necessary guidance. Every use of the cantrip should be an RP heavy moment, with some gravity added to the situation by the casting. If the...

D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation character hooks?

Do you know what characters the players are playing yet? I find it much easier to make hooks once I know a character's background - e.g. I've got a warlock (his patron wants him to find the soulmonger and hand it over to it) a cleric (his temple is desperate to get to the bottom of why their...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tomb of Annihilation - Moral Question

I solved the problem using plot hooks for the individual players. One is a warlock - his patron wants the soulmonger. Another is a cleric - his temple wants the curse ended so they don't look like powerless idiots. Another is an old family friend of Syndra Silvane. If a majority of the party...
