Caverns of Thracia and White Plume Mountain advice needed

Thracia is for beginning level characters, but not for beginning players. That is, you can handle it if you really know what you are doing. Obviously, some encounters are impossible, but good players know when not to fight. As to White Plume Mountain, I don't think the original module had...

D&D 3.x What great third party 3E product did I miss?

It's funny, I bought almost every DCC adventure they put out, but in retrospect, most of them aren't very good. (Castle Whiterock is one big exception, it's excellent). Green Ronin put out an excellent series of historical settings: Rome, Egypt (Hamunpatra), the Trojan War, Testament, and a...

    arguments over physics

One of the things I've always felt guilty about is one time pointing out to the GM that silencers don't work on a revolver. It's one of those things that bug me (you see it a lot in TV and movies, though not as much as you used to since revolvers aren't nearly as common), but I shouldn't have...

Astonishing Swordsmen & Sorcerers of Hyperborea (Video Review)

IMHO, it's a solid game, but kind of missed the whole Howard/Lovecraft vibe, at least in terms of rules. It's basically AD&D 1e with a couple more classes and different flavors of humans instead of elves and dwarves, etc. OTOH, Crypts & Things really nailed it.

    AquaMoan

I really don't understand his appeal. He was terrible in Conan (and it bombed, badly) and terrible in Stargate Atlantis. Didn't watch Baywatch when he was on it.

    Damaging Other Peoples' Property

Eh. My elderly great uncle would do this all the time. He drove a huge car and would just fling his door open, almost always slamming into the car next to him. I don't think it's anything new. This is why people with nice cars often park far away from the entrance to stores, hoping no one will...

Does the OGL still apply for 3rd Edition?

If you can figure out a CAD program, then yeah, you can probably figure out monster design in Pathfinder. But apparently Paizo uses a spreadsheet to do the calculations (or so they said in the Superstar contest). But my point was, it's not something you can do on a whim, you have to spend some...

Does the OGL still apply for 3rd Edition?

That's the 3.5 SRD you linked to. There's supposedly a link to 3.0 on that page, but it just goes to the 3.5 srd as well. The 3.0 was released under a "gentleman's agreement" and had monsters like the Mind Flayer and Beholder which is why some early 3rd product products had them. But 3.5 was...

Does the OGL still apply for 3rd Edition?

Strictly speaking though, the 3.0 SRD was never released officially under the OGL, only the 3.5 srd was. There's not a huge difference, but it's there. And you can't use the d20 logo and such, the d20 System Trademark License was revoked. A lot of publishers get around this by just saying OGL...

Third Party Character Creation iOS App Removed

It doesn't give that person a right, but how does it harm the company if they have no competing product to offer? If anything, character generators and such help Hasbro because it gets people playing the game, which in turn sells more books. I mean, look at Star Trek. There are no Star Trek...

D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

I don't think it always has been punitive. Or even existed, except as a straw man argument. Remember Erac's Cousin from the original Rogue's Gallery? Apparently he was an identical replacement to the original Erac that died. Beyond that, Raise Dead has been in the game since the 3 little...

Theory :At what point does a person have to cross to no longer be bound by the OGL?

OGL isn't about sharing mechanics, it's about sharing text. At least that was WOTC's original idea. We let you use some of our text (what we released in the SRD) and in return, you give up certain rights, like claiming compatibility with your products, except under terms of a separate license...

"Tabletop D&D Has Lost Its Way" Says Pathfinder Video Game Exec

I really don't think it's the cost of the license, given that Cryptic/Perfect world and Turbine have D&D licenses. I think he means that with Hasbro, D&D is just one IP among many 100s. It doesn't get their primary focus. When it was just WOTC, while D&D wasn't their cash cow, it was...

This Weekend @ The BoxOffice: 2015_Feb.08

Apparently it's based on a very popular young adult fantasy series that I've never heard of (it's from the UK), but is supposed to be very good. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Spook%27s_Apprentice The movie, not so much. But did anyone see the "pilot" episode for the Wheel of Time TV show...

Crypts & Things 2e, though Silent Legions is probably close.

By Crom! Modiphius is Making a New CONAN RPG

It's completely ridiculous. Howard died childless in 1937 in Texas, yet somehow a Swedish Company (Paradox, they make PC games) owns the rights to his work. A handful of his stories are in public domain in the US, most notably Red Nails, but presumably trying to use those as a basis for...

D&D 5E (2014) Kickstart Dragon Magazine or any other rpg type magazine?

    D&D 5E (2014) Human-only campaign setting?

There was the Lankhmar setting for AD&D. A lot of it was crap, especially one author in the line liked to put himself in the adventures, but at least the earlier stuff is decent.

    C&Ds for Online D&D 5E Character Generators

Actually, I think standard IP practices today is to leave fan created material alone, as long as it's not a commercial project. Companies have learned that allowing it to exist doesn't actually cost them anything, but alienating fans by being strict about derivative material will. (edit...
