    D&D 5E (2014) Playtest Fatigue?

I ran one really fun playtest session... and just haven't had time for more. I would have done it if I could! But honestly, I feel like the rules peaked in the second packet. There was a lot of really interesting, innovative stuff in those first few packets... but most of it has been bled out...

D&D 5E (2014) 02/08/13 New playtest packet to released today. [Udate: PACKAGE OUT!][

Forgot to mention that I find the feats really cool for the most part; they feel quite hefty. At first I was thinking that everyone should get one at 1st level, then I remembered that you don't really become a full adventurer until 3rd or 4th, I forget which. So it all makes sense.

The wizard traditions are indeed much better... but they're now even more tightly locked into the ludicrous spell schools. Blech! At least they have some seriously flavorful abilities. (And apparently we'll be able to build our own, so that's something.) I was... mostly pretty underwhelmed...

Legends & Lore: Roleplaying in D&D Next

Wow, laying it on a bit thick, aren't we? Show me where I advocated turning D&D into FATE. You said that mechanics to reward roleplaying were antithetical to the very concept of a roleplaying game; I pointed out that there are perfectly good roleplaying games that have such mechanics. Now...

Legends & Lore: Roleplaying in D&D Next

I think Dausuul has hit the nail on the head. By "baked in", I think Mearls means we'll see class features that reference this mechanic. The paladin code might be a source of Inspiration. Bard song might enable Inspirations to be shared with the whole group. Clerics might spend Inspiration to...

How did Trek Become Such a Phenomenon?

I'll be your second! B5 certainly had its bad moments, but it blows DS9 out of the water. And BSG? Great acting, no question there... but terrible plotting. If they'd had a JMS style arc planned out from the beginning, it would have been SO much better. They were making everything up as...

D&D 5E (2014) June 27 Q&A: Modular Features, Paladin Alignment and Legendary Creatures

Thank you for the kind words. I'm not sure how XP even works any more, I don't see a button to do so? Yet obviously it works for some. I can see a place for this - in certain campaigns. I don't see why it needs to be part of all or even most campaigns, so I'm glad to see it become modular...

    D&D 5E (2014) July 11 Q&A: Cosmology, Monster Descriptions and Monster Variants

...That's actually pretty plausible. I sincerely hope you're right.

    D&D 5E (2014) July 11 Q&A: Cosmology, Monster Descriptions and Monster Variants

The answer to the first question made my brain explode. Say what? Am I misunderstanding? Is he really saying that there's One Cosmology to Rule Them All and everything else is a subset of it? So that the base cosmology is so comprehensive you can just lop off one bit and get Planescape, lop...

D&D 5E (2014) June 27 Q&A: Modular Features, Paladin Alignment and Legendary Creatures

Well, if you like it, there's an end. There's no disputing matters of taste. (Because mine is obviously right and yours is obviously wrong, of course! ;) I hope you don't mind if I ask you a few questions about how you do this, though? Because while I'll grant you that the term 'alignment'...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wandering Monsters: Monster Mashups

Okay, I see what you're saying here... but are you really saying there shouldn't be elves and dwarves in the PH? Or that they should have no flavor text whatever? Aren't those just as 'opt-out' as the ettercap description? The game text in no edition whatever has reflected the (true) fact...

D&D 5E (2014) June 27 Q&A: Modular Features, Paladin Alignment and Legendary Creatures

Apologies for posting three times in a row, but I just realized I forgot to reply to some people. There's a lot of truth to this; maybe the Paladin *should* have been a prestige class. (Though honestly, it always had more traction than the Assassin did, at least in my experience.) But...

D&D 5E (2014) June 27 Q&A: Modular Features, Paladin Alignment and Legendary Creatures

Now, contrariwise, Good and Evil *are* well-defined ... but I still question their usefulness as a codified alignment system, at any rate for mortals. If I say of my character that he's loyal to a fault, is proud of his family lineage to the point of unreason, has trouble drinking in...

D&D 5E (2014) June 27 Q&A: Modular Features, Paladin Alignment and Legendary Creatures

The last couple pages of this thread perfectly illustrate what I was saying... that Lawful and Chaotic alignments are ill-defined and only breed arguments about what they "really" mean. The terms have nothing to do with how real people actually act. They are useful only in a Moorcockian...

D&D 5E (2014) June 27 Q&A: Modular Features, Paladin Alignment and Legendary Creatures

Of course it could have - and did, in many campaigns. (I'd never be willing to play a paladin in a campaign where that discussion didn't take place.) But it will, in my view, make that discussion a lot easier on both parties if we can do away with having to settle what 'a chaotic act' is...

D&D 5E (2014) June 27 Q&A: Modular Features, Paladin Alignment and Legendary Creatures

I'm all for the paladin being required to follow a code. I just think that 'Lawful Good' is a poor description of one. Honestly, after all these years, the difference between 'Lawful' and 'Chaotic' has NEVER been clearly delineated; it has caused arguments for as long as I've been involved in...

    Who Are Your Friends?

I've always believed in having each party member knowing at least some of the others beforehand. It just makes no sense to suddenly bond in a tavern. The idea of giving some mechanical reason to roleplay friendship and rivalry is interesting. I think there should be some consideration to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Homebrew Bard Class

Not bad - I like what you did with Bardic Lore in particular. Fascination for 1 round/level seems... short for low levels. It's a pretty weak effect to start with. While it's traditional, I've never understood why both spells and bardic song are needed. Personally I think I'd beef up the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizards: Evokers *and* Illusionists?

I think specialization needs to go much further than it has in the recent past. And it needs to *not* be based on the spell schools, which are artificial, vague, and never intended to support such use. (Frankly, I think the spell schools as we have known them could just as well disappear...

Kingdom: Fear and Loathing in Emporopolis (Updated June 20, 2013)

Two bits of news: The Kickstarter just ended, at the pleasantly palindromic value of $30303. :) And 1113 backers - not bad! And we just started our new game of Kingdom in Emporopolis tonight, getting halfway through the first Crossroad and with Crisis already on the verge of breaking out! I...
